R E S O L U T I O N
NO. 865
WHEREAS the City of Renton has.been faced in the past with the
problem of determining the retirement of individual members of the
"Miscellaneous Personnel" group upon their reaching a certain age and
WHEREAS no fixed or settled policy has existed in providing for a uni-
form determination of compulsory retirement and WHEREAS the City of
Renton now wishes to provide and follow a policy`of compulsory retire-
ment for all "Miscellaneous Personnel", so as to avoid inequities but
to provide equal treatment to all concerned, NOW THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
RENTON AS FOLLOWS:
a. It shall hereafter. be the established policy of the City of
Renton to sanction and require the compulsory retirement of all
"Miscellaneous Personnel", as that term is defined by the State-wide
Retirement System, at age 65 except as hereinafter provided.
b. It shall be' the duty of, the office of . the City Clerk to notify
in writing the City Council and the person in charge of the respective
department whenever a certain employee has reached his 64th birthday.
The person in charge of such department shall be responsible for hiring,
training, or causing to be trained a successor to the employee about to
be retired so as to .provide for an uninterrupted continuation of the
services rendered and to be rendered to the City of Renton and to
eliminate the necessity of delaying the retirement or extending the
retirement age of any employee. However, if the respective department
has made diligent efforts to secure and train -a replacement and it is
shown that for reasons beyond the control of such department, the
replacement has become unavailable or unsuitable to fill and assume
certain duties, then in. such event., and if the best interests of the
City so require, the Council may grant an extension of the retirement
age but such an extension shall in no event exceed the period of one
(1) year.
