Second by Barbara Clark-Elliott. Motion carried. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Lari White made a motion to approve the May 13, 2009,minutes as written. Second by Vern Nichols. Motion carried. AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION: i�Tone. NEW BUSINESS: The Commissioners shared their experiences/encounters with diversity issues during May: ➢ Barbara Clark-Elliott visited Madison Middle School to educate seventh grade students about Parents,Families &Friends of Lesbians and Gays. ➢ Lari White attended a Cinco de Mayo celebration at Jefferson Community Center on Beacon Hill. ➢ Kathleen Booher has been attending a series of trainings,"2009 �leventh Northwest Diversity Learning Series"sponsored�y Boeing and several other major corporations. Kathleen Booher distributed numerous pamphlets and educational information on diversity. �he also shared two books,"Communicating witii Mexicans" and"Bourdieu&Culture"to begin a diversity lib�rary. The books will be available at the Liberty Park Community Building. She asked the Commissioners to initial the inside�covers after reading. Advisory Commission on Diversity June 10,2009 Page 2 of 3 For those interested, Dr. Shapiro will be conducting a free seminar for people facing or recovering from cancer at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Foundation on Eastlake, June 13, at 8:30 a.m. NEW BUSINESS: As mentioned in the March 2009 meeting with Mayor Law, he is still very interested in connecting with leaders of various ethnic groups in the Renton community. This is important for the City's Emergency Preparedness Division in order to contact and educate the citizens during emergencies. The Commissioners are to email Jerry Rerecich the names and affiliations of community leaders and he will forward the information to the Communications Director for the City. It was noted that Renton Technical Colle�e offer free classes, "Map Z'our Neighborhood", on how to get to know your neighbors and how to assist them in times of emergencies. Kathleen Booher recommended the Commission begin planning for 2010 monthly diversity activities and establish their goals and plan for the year. Jerry Rerecich mentioned Renton Technical College(RTC)will not have the CommunityFest this year,however, the City and RTC will partner and have an end of the school year potluck picnic at Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park, June 29, from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Over 300 people are expected to attend. This will be an opporiunity for the Commission to reach out to the community. Jerty will provide a table and Diversity Commission materials as well as a canopy if needed. Commissioners are asked to call Gloria Gamba,4�5-430-6600 if they will or will not attend. Jerry Rerecich will check to see if there are any remaining funds in the budget to purchase t-shirts for the Commissioners. OLD BUSINESS: Jerry Rerecich gave an update on the proposed three-city workshop. The Federal Way Diversity Commission will be having their retreat/workshop in August. The three- city�vorkshop will be tabled and possibly be revisited in September. Vern Nichols has submitted an informative article, "Who's Your Neighbor" explaining how to get to know your neighbors, their traditions, nationalities,to avoid crime, and protect one another regardless of ethnicity. This article will be sent to the City's Communications Director for possible distribution in the City's monthly newsletter and/or in the utility bills. T'he Commission would like Jerry Rerecich to also contact the Renton Reporter to see if they are interested in publishing the document. Charles Thomas has now missed four consecutive meetings. A letter will be sent to him requesting that he send the Commission a letter of intent to continue as a member. Second by Vern Nichols. All were in favor. Gloria Gamba will advertise the cancellation in the newspaper and have the website changed. ADJOURNMENT: Vern Nichols made a motion to adjourn.
