Eligible applicants were to submit an Application Packet consisting of the following four items:
1)Application, 2) Cover Letter, 3) Statement of Qualifications, and 4)Resume. The examination process
consisted of following three major parts: 1) Written Assigmnent, 2) Oral Presentation&Assignment, and
3) Structured Interviews Boards.

Any combination equivalent to four years of college course work in Fire Science,Public Administration, or
related field and a post probationary Captain in the Renton Fire Department or equivalent in another fire
department. Valid Washington State driver's license. Documented National Incident Management System
qualification at an advanced level, including the ability to serve in a command or general staff position at
major incidents or events.

BASIC FUNCI'ION:
Under the direction af the Fire Chief, assist in planning, organizing, directing and
controlling the activities, resources and operatians of one of the sections of Renton Fire
Departrnent.
REPRESENTATIVE E}UTIES:
Human Resaurce Mana�ement:
* Evaivate the needs of their respective section regarding assignment of
personnel based on the abi(ity af the prospective member to perform the
necessary body of work.
* Participate in and cantribute to the development maintenance of a work
environment that supports the values of the Renton Fire Department
including the maintenance af a positive labor management relationship.
* Assist in planning, organizing and directing of inember training, educatian
and develapmerit activities.
Maintain an awareness af inember assistance optians available ta department
members and recarrtmendation options as appropriate.
Recagnize members for work product and tasks as appropriate to inciude the
recommendation af inembers for departments, city and other types of
appropriate recagnition.
* Investigate, propose and implement corrective action for substandard
performance af inernbers far corrective actian as necessary.
* Operate in the best interests of Fire Departrnent management and in
conformance with collective bargaining agreements with labor unions and
city policies relative ta non-represented employees,
* Evaluate the perfarmar►ce of direct reporting personnel in their assigned
seetiort.

Cammuni#v/Gavernment Relations:
* Represent the Fire Department at community and city government activities
and meetings as appropriate.
* Maintain an overall awareness af local, state and national requirements and
standards; and be conversant in, as a minimum, those that affect their
assigned section of the Fi►-e Department.
* Communicate both orally and in writing with City officials, comrriunity
leaders and outside agencies to coordinate activities, exchange information,
provide expertise, respand to questior►s and resofve issues regarding
department operations and service.
* Recammend revision in city, state or nationai reguiations; ar natianal
standards when in the interest of the City of Renton and the environment
services provided by the Fire Department are delivered.
Administration:
* Recomrnend long range plans for the effectiveness of Fire Department lines
of business in accardance with the missian and ualues of the City of Renton.
* Participate irt devetoping long and short-range p{ans, gaals and objectives
and assess progress in achieving established gaals far their assigned sectior�
of the Fire Department.
* Develop appropriate department poiices for programs ariginating in their
assigned section af the Fire Department and recommend policies for
pragrams originating in their assigned sectian of tt�e Fire Department.
Coordinate operations and activities between sections af the Fire Department.
* Propose performance measures for their assigned section of the Fire
Department that support the visian, mission and values af the Fire
Departrnent.
* Act as chief administratar of the department in the absence of the Fire Chief
or as directecl.
* Manage assigned budget and provide status reports to the Fire Chief as
required on fiscal management issues in the section.
* Assure the maintenance and repair a€Fire Departrnent equipment, apparatus
and faciiities.

Inspectian/Investi�ation
* Assure proper enforcement of the Renton Fire Codes; direct code
enforcement activities as required.

* Respond to emergenty incidents within the jurisdiction of the Fire

functions in the Emergency Operations Center as directed by the Fire
