EXAMINATION PROCESS:
Eligible applicants indicated their intention to participate in the examination process by submitting a letter of intention to
the Civil Service/Human Resources Department. The examination process consisted of four areas: Oral Presentation (20%
of total score),Written Assignment,which was linked to the Oral Presentation (20%of total score), Management Skills
Exercise(30%of total score), and Incident Management Simulation (worth 30%of total score). The Written Assignment
portion was provided on April 14, 2010 and due on July 23, 2010. The Assessment Center was held on August 3rd&4th
and tested the remaining three areas.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
The promotional examination is open to Lieutenants of the City of Renton Fire and Emergency Services Department who
have been employed three consecutive years or more and who have held their present rank of Lieutenant for one year or
more subsequent to their regular appointment, or would reach eligibility status by the current list expiration date of
September 23, 2010. They must also meet the minimum job requirements as stated in the Fire Captain position
description: Graduation from a standard high school,vocational school or equivalent. Requirements per union contract,
employees hired on or after January 1, 1997 are required to have a two-year fire science degree to qualify for the
promotional exam for Captain.
EXAMINATION CONTENT:
The examination consisted of Written Assignment on Fire Station Maintenance, Safety and Operational Readiness, and
rated on Composition & Writing Mechanics, Structure/Content of Document, Resources, Persuasiveness, and Overall
Quality of Document. This written document was to be supplemented with a PowerPoint presentation and presented to
assessors at their assigned time. Assessors were:Joan Montegary(Woodinville Fire}&April Alexander(Mayor's Office).
Oral Presentation—Rated on technical knowiedge(based on three general questions), Oral Communications Skills, Overall
Quality of Presentation,and Suitability for Fire Captain.Assessors: Mike McAuliffe(Bothell) & Mark Risen (Bellevue)
Management Skills Exercise — Provided two scenarios for candidate, with four questions for each scenario. Candidates
rated on Communication, Mgmt, Problem Solving, and Leadership Skilis, & Application of Policy. Assessors: Marty
Grisham (Tukwila) & Paul Wright(Kent). Incident Mgmt Simulation—Involved one scenario with three parts. Candidates
were scored on Leadership, Appiication of Standard practices, IMS, Problem Solving & Communication Skills. Assessors:
Kevin Olson (VRFA) and John Madson (Seatac). After examination period one protest occurred, and corrections to
affected scores were made (due to a clerical error). A combined minimum score of 70% was required for placement on
the eligibility list. Candidates were ranked on a two-year eligibility list according to their earned score, plus seniority
points.

EXAMINATION PROCESS:
The Renton Police Department received several applications on-line. Eight (8) candidates were
interviewed. Effective 1/26/10, candidates are no longer required to take a written examination.
(Candidates actual written reports will be obtained during the background investigation phase.)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Must have been a regular police officer for a minimum of one year in the past 36 months in order to be
considered. Must pass the written test and oral board in order to be placed on the eligibility.
EXAMINATION CONTENT:
The oral board interview consists of a set of 15 structured questions, and the rating of five dimensions,
developed for an experienced police officer. A passing score of 70% or greater is required to be placed
on the eligibility list.

EXAMINATION PROCESS:
Public Safety Testing conducts the initial written test and physical exam and forwards those candidates
that pass the physical agility exam and have a passing score of 75%or more on the written test to the
City for further testing. The City received test scores from 157 candidates for the month of July. The top
40 candidates based on the written test were invited to participate in the oral board. Only those
candidates who pass with an 80%or higher oral board score would be placed on the eligibility fist. The
oral board score has a 70%weight of the final score with the written score has a 25%weight.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Must be 21 years of age by the date of the written examination; must be a U.S. citizen; must be able to
read and write the English language; must be a high school graduate or equivalent; must be able to
meet minimum medical standards; must be able to pass a background investigation, psychological
evaluation, drug screen, and polygraph examination prior to hire; must possess a valid Washington State
driver's license without record of suspension or revocation of driving privileges in this or any other state;
must pass the written test and oral board in order to be placed on the eligibility list.
EXAMINATION CONTENT:
