Renton Public Library supports lifelong learning for the public by anticipating and responding to
community needs for inforniation, and by inspiring and encouraging the co�nmunity's desire to read.

MINUTES
1. CALL TO ORDER: The August 14, 2008, meeting of the Library Board at the Renton Public
Library was called to order at 7:00 p.m.
2. APPROVAL OF AGENDA: John DuBois MOVED THAT THE AGENDA FOR At�gust 14,
2008,be approved. SECONDED by Amy Pieper. The motion CARRIED.
3. REVIEW OF MINUTES: Amy Pieper MOVED THAT THE MINUTES OF May 8, 2008,be
� approved. SECONDED by John DuBois. The motion CARRIED.
4. PUBLIC COMMENT: None.
5. COMMLJNICATIONS: None.
6. FINANCIAL REPORT: The July 2008 Renton Public Library Eape�rditure Statt�s•Repof�t�vas
distributed to Board Meinbers.
7. MONTHLY REPORT: STATISTICS—The July 2008 Renton Public Library Statistics report
was distributed to the Board. It«as noted that circulation continues to increase over last year.
Library Director, Bette Anderson, informed the Board that from March 1, 2008 through July 31,
2008, 331 people who live in the Benson Hill annexed area have registered for library cards.
8. OLD BUSINESS: MASTER PLAN-Bette reported on the June 16 and July 14 Committee of
the Whole presentations. Emily Garland from the Renton Reporter is�vriting an article about the
library's master plan process.
RENTON PUBLIC LIBRARY/K1NG COUNTY LIBRA.RY SYSTEM CROSS USE -
Information about the revised cross use costs was distributed.
RENTON RIVER DAYS -The library was very busy the Sunday of Renton River Days with
visitors for the Quilt Sho�v as ��ell as for Renton Rotary's Rubber Ducky Derby.

BOARD MEMBER OPEMNG - Youth member Tyler 1�7orse has only attended one Board
Meeting since August 2007, and he has not responded to messages. John DuBois MOVED
THAT THE BOARD INVOICE THE PROVISION 1N T'HI? LIBRARY BOARD ORDINANCE ,�
THAT STATES "a vacancy shall occur whene��er a trustee absents himself for three consecutive
regular meetings...or for an aggregate of five regular�neetings in a single year"AND PROCEED
TO RECRUIT FOR A N�W YOUTH MEMBEK TO FILL THE POSITION. The motion�vas
SECONDED by Peter Hartley and C�IRRIED unaniinously.
9. NEW BUSINESS: 2009 BUDGET -The proposed library budget for 2009 was distributed.
GATES GRANT-Bette explained that the library is a recipient of an Opportunity Online grant for
hardware from the Gates Foundation. We will receive three coinputers for the Highlands Branch in
2008/2009,and an additional three in 2009/2010. The library must provide $1,950 in matching
funds the first year, and $3,900 the second year.
An additional requirement of grant recipients is attendance at a conference titled "Turning the Page:
Building your Library Community". This training on library advocacy and fundraising was
developed by the Public Library Association, a division of the American Library Association, and it
will be held in Stevenson, WA, October 6 and 7, 2008. The Gates Foundation pays all costs for
three attendees and recommends the Library Director, one other staff person, and one Library
Trustee attend. Infonnation about the conference �vas distributed, and any Board Member wishing
to attend should contact Bette no later than August 27.
10. ADJOURNMENT: The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m. The next regular meeting of the Library
Board is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., Thursday, September 11, 2008, at the Renton Public Library.
