MISSION STATEMENT
Renton Public Library supports lifelong learning for the public by anticipating and responding to
community needs for information, and by inspiring and encouraging the community's desire to read.

MINUTES
1. CALL TO ORDER: The September 1 l, 2008, meeting of the Library Board at the Renton Public
Library was called to order at 7:00 p.m.
2. APPROVAL OF AGENDA: John DuBois MOVED THAT THE AGENDA FOR September 11,
2008, be approved. SECONDED by Catherine Ploue-Smith. The motion CARRIED.
3. REVIEW OF MINUTES: Catherine Ploue-Smith MOVED THAT THE MINLTTES OF August
14, 2008, be approved. SECONDED by Heather Nugent. The motion CARRIED.
4. PUBLIC COMMENT: None.
5. COMMLTNICATIONS: None.
6. FINANCIAL REPORT: The August 2008 Renton Public Library Expenditure Status Report was
distributed to Board Members.
7. MONTHLY REPORT: STATISTICS—The August 2008 Renton Public Library Statistics
report was distributed to the Board. It was noted that while most categories show an increase
over last year, attendance at children's programs has shown a decrease for the same period.
Library staff feel this decrease in attendance has improved the quality of storytimes for those
who attend.
8. OLD BUSINESS: MASTER PLAN-The latest developments in the library master plan process
were discussed. Marty Wine was available to answer questions from Board Members about how
the City is proceeding. The library master plan will be discussed at a Committee of the Whole
meeting on October 8 at 2pm.
GATES GRANT—Library Director Bette Anderson reported that she, Amy Pieper and Heather
Nugent will be attending the Gates Foundation-required training on library advocacy in
Stevenson, Washington, October 6 and 7.

9. NEW BUSINESS: HIGHLANDS LIBRARY SPACE PLAN -Architect Mark Nelson has
developed a space plan for the Highlands Library to accommodate the computers we will receive
through the Gates Grant. Bette is working with George McBrid�to install the necessary wiring, and
she will be working with Facilities to acquire appropriate furniture.
NEW CHILDREN'S ROOM FURNITURE -Two new loveseats have been ordered to replace the
worn-out furniture in the children's room. The new seating features bright colors and very durable
upholstery with a vapor barrier to protect it from accidents. Extra fabric has been ordered to
upholster stools at a nearby table.
BABY SIGNING -The library is now offering signing classes for babies two Fridays a month. The
first session was held on Friday, September 5, and was well attended.
TEEN ADVISORY BOAR_D—Librarian Jessica Marie has started a Teen Board to help develop
and promote library programs for teens. The first meeting was held on September 11. Four teens
attended and several others have expressed interest in participating.
10. ADJOURNMENT: The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m. The next regular meeting of the Library
Board is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 9, 2008, at the Renton Public Library.
