MINUTES
1. CALL TO ORDER: The December 11, 200�, meeting of the Libl�a�y Board at the Renton Public
Library was called to order at 7:00 p.m.
2. APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Amy Pieper MOVED THAT THE AGENDA FOR Decembel- I I,
2008, be approved. S�CONDED by John DuBois. The motion CARRIED.
3. REVIEW OF MINUTES: Amy Pieper MOVED THAT THE MINU"TES OF October 9, 2008, be
approved. SECONDED by John DuBois. The motion CARRIED.
4. PUBLIC COMMENT: None.
5. COMMUNICATIONS: None.
6. FINANCIAL REPORT: The November 2008 Renton Public Library E.�-pendittn-e Stunis REpoi-t
was distributed to Board Members.
7. MONTHLY REPORT: STATISTICS —The October and November 2008 Renton Public Librarv
Statistics reports were distributed to the Board.
8. OLD BUSINESS: MASTER PLAN —Bette Anderson reported on a recent �neeting with staff�
from the King County Library System (KCLS). They provided additional information about
KCLS buildir�gs. The City Council and City officials �vill have additional discussions on the
Master Plan after the beginning of the ne�v y�ar.
HIGHLANDS BRANCH PROJECT—The Gates Poundatiun Grant Project is in process. New
shelving for videos, DVDs, and paperbacks has been installed. New computer ftu-niture, and the
new wiring are scheduled for installation December 17 and 18. The libraiy will be closed both
these days to facilitate the work.
2009 BUDGET—The library budget��as approved by the City Council as submitted by the
Mayor.

BOARD MEMBER OPENING—The teen �vho indicated an interest in serving on the Library
Board has decided to withdraw her application. She was lool<ing for a one-time project and had
not understood that Board membership �vould be an on-going commitment.
9. NEW BUSINESS: DVD SECURITY CASES - The process for handlinb DVDs at the Check-out
desk has become too time-constuning for staff no�v that tlle collection has gro�vn to over 6,000 titles.
Many libraries use locking security cases so disl<s can remain in their cases on the public shelves.
The disks cannot be removed from the cases until staff unlocl<s the case. The Board ezamined four
different styles of locking cases and experimented with the locking/�mlockinb mechanisms.
10. ADJOURNMENT: The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m. The next regular ineeting of the Library
Board is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.,Thursday, Januaiy 8, 2009, at the Renton Public Library.
