MISSION STATEMENT
Renton Public Library supports lifelong learning for the public by anticipating and responding to
community needs for information, and by inspiring and encouraging the community's desire to read.

MINUTES
1. CALL TO ORDER: The Apri19, 2009, meeting of the Library Board at the Renton Public
Library was called to order at 7:OOp.m by Acting President Peter Hartley.
2. APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Amy Pieper MOVED THAT THE AGENDA FOR April 9, 2009,
be approved. SECONDED by John DuBois. The motion CARRIED.
3. REVIEW OF MINUTES: Amy Pieper MOVED THAT THE MINUTES OF March 12, 2009, be
�rrrr approved. SECONDED by Heather Nugent. The motion CARRIED.
4. PUBLIC COMMENT: None
5. COMMiJNICATIONS: The Renton Reporter published a letter to the editor complementing the
Library Staff on their excellent service.
6. FINANCIAL REPORT: The Expenditure Status Report for February 2009 was distributed. The
March report is not yet available from Finance and will be distributed at the next meeting.
7. MONTHLY REPORT: STATISTICS—March 2009 statistics were distributed, with increases
noted in all categories.
S. OLD BUSINESS: 2009 BUDGET—Measures are being taken to help lessen the City's
projected four million dollar shortfall for the 2009 budget. Union employees will take 41.8 hours
furlough during which time the City will largely be closed. Management has agreed to take
comparable salary reductions.
MASTER PLAN—The target date for a public vote on annexation of the Renton Public Library
to the King County Library System(KCLS)is February 2010. If voters approve annexation, the
transition of library operations to KCLS will begin immediately after the election results are
confirmed.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATNES -A House Bill increasing the population limit for cities'
�""' annexation to a library district from 100,000 to 300,000 was signed into law by the Governor,
thereby removing a potential obstruction to a KCLS annexation of the City of Renton.

OUTREACH LIBRARIAN—Outreach Librarian, Kristine Baker, is creating guidelines and �
application forms for working with homebound patrons. She hosted an Evenstart event in the
Renton Highlands,reaching over 325 adults and children, and is planning an adult summer
reading program.
JOB-HUNTING RESOURCES—Librarian Aaron Oesting created a Job Hunting Resources page
on the library website. It provides links to a wealth of information including job-listings, help-
sites and networking information. It also promotes the career section of the Renton Public
Library that contains a wonderful collection ofresources for job seekers. �
VOLUNTEER PROJECT: OVER-SIZED BOOKS—Volunteers from the East Renton
Community Church will be working at the library, Apri126, helping to create a new `Over-Sized"
book area. The project involves moving large numbers of books to create shelf space, and
changing the catalog entry for each over-sized book to indicate its new location. The library
expects circulation of these items to increase because of this re-organization.
9. NEW BUSINESS: PUBLIC MEN'S ROOM—The public men's room is being cleaned twice a
day in response to patron complaints,but there are still issues with cleanliness and odors. Peter
Renner,Facilities Director, will have a new sealer applied to the floor as a trial to determine if
this new product should be used in other city facilities where there are similar issues.
10. ADJOURNMENT: The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m. The next regular meeting of the Library
Board is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.,Thursday,May 14, 2009, at the Renton Public Library.
