MINUTES
1. CALL TO ORDER: The January 14, 2010, meeting of the Library Board at the Renton Public
Library was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President Catherine Ploue-Smith.
2. APPROVAL OF AGENDA: John DuBois MOVED THAT THE AGENDA FOR January 14,
2010,be approved. SECONDED by Peter Hartley. The motion CARRIED.
3. REVIEW OF MINiJTES: Peter Hartley MOVED THAT THE MINiJTES OF November 12,
2009,be approved. SECONDED by Amy Pieper. The motion CARRIED.
4. PUBLIC COMMENT: None.
5. COMMLJNICATIONS: None.
6. FINANCIAL REPORT: The Expenditure Status Report for December 2009 was not yet
available.
7. MONTHLY REPORT: STATISTICS—The December 2009 and the 2009 Annual Renton Public
Library Statistics reports were distributed to the Board. Bette Anderson pointed out that total
check out of library materials in 2009 was slightly mare than a 12% increase over 2008.
8. OLD BUSINESS: 2010 BUDGET-Public Service Impacts—Bette Anderson distributed
information describing the fina120101ibrary budget and the service reductions the library will
impose on March 1, 2010, if voters reject annexation to the King County Library System
(KCLS).
K1NG COUNTY LIBRARY SYSTEM
Staff-Bette Anderson reported on a meeting with KCLS Human Resources staff and the City's
Human Resources department on January 7 to discuss possibilities for transferring employee sick
leave and earned vacation time if annexation occurs. The City and KCLS unions met on January
8 to discuss other employee concerns.

RECIPROCAL BORROWING AGREEMENT—The Board discussed the current reciprocal
agreement with KCLS and the way the cross use payment was calculated. Bette Anderson
suggested that in the event annexation to KCLS is rejected it may be necessary to renegotiate the
terms of the agreement to lower the cost to the City.
BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS TRAINING—Amy Pieper and Bette Anderson reported on the
training event that was held on November 30 by the Community Services Department.
9. NEW BUSINESS: LAPTOP COMPUTER GRANT—Librarians Laurie Finlayson and Kris
Baker have submitted an application to the Washington State Library for a ten-computer lab
funded by the Federal Library Services and Technology Act. The purpose of the lab is to provide
classes and assistance for people involved in job searching, writing resumes and on-line
applications.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS—Catherine Ploue-Smith was unanimously re-elected to serve as
Library Board President during 2010.
10. ADJOURNMENT: The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m. The next regular meeting of the Library
Board is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., Thursday,February 11, 2010, at the Renton Public Library.
