Meetinq Minutes
September 2, 2008 Renton City Hall
4:30 p.m. Council Conference Room
Municipal Arts Commissioners Present: Patricia Pepper, Dalia Amin, Fred Lund, Doug Kyes, Mike
O'Halloran, Evelyn Reingold
Municipal Arts Commissioners Absent: Jerri Everett, Linda Middlebrooks, Britt Peterson

CALL TO ORDER: Commissioner Pat Pepper called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m.
! INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS: Commissioner Pepper introduced Valerie Gower and Denise Zullig, two
of the three applicants that will be presented to City Council on September 8th for approval to the
Commission. Valerie mentioned she was interested in helping artists and Denise spoke about her
passion for the arts.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The Commission approved the August 2008 minutes as written. MOVED
BY KYES, SECONDED BY O'HALLORAN. COMMISSIONERS CONCUR, MOTION CARRIED.
CORRESPONDENCE: Commissioner Lund distributed mail to RMAC, which were miscellaneous
materials from various art groups. Elizabeth Stewart shared invitations with the Commission for the Coal
Car Unveiling on September 18 from 5:30 p.m.—7:30 p.m. and a preview flyer about a 2009 exhibit
"Where Two Rivers Meet: The Black and Cedar Rivers"at the History Museum June through December,
2009. There will be a call for artists associated with the exhibit.
OLD BUSINESS:
Local Arts Orqanization Updates:
� Local Arts Agency(LAA)meeting: Commissioner Pepper attended the Kirkland Arts Council meeting in
August. She noted that their group had very similar discussions to our group.
Arts Unlimited: The 3`d Annual Downtown Renton Art&Antique Walk was held on Saturday, August 23.
Over 40 venues, 65 artists were showcased throughout Downtown. Attendance was lower than
expected-approximately 300. Arts Unlimited will explore changes for next year and welcome feedback
and assistance with planning next year's events.
Allied Arts: The Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra will be in Renton on Sunday, October 12, at 3:00 p.m. at
Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center, as hosted by Allied Arts. Tickets are$8 for adults, $5 for seniors,
and $3 for students (18 and under). This event is partially funded by the Renton Municipal Arts
Commission Financial Assistance Award.

SoCo Culture: The next meeting will be a joint meeting with King County heritage groups on Tuesday,
September 23, at 10:00 a.m. at the Tukwila Community Center.
Action Item List:
#1-Master Plan for RMAC:A budget request has been submitted to the Mayor to fund an arts and culture
master plan in 2009. The Mayor will present the budget to Council in October and the Council will
deliberate and pass a final budget in December.
#2-Bravo Award: Allied Arts nominated Barb Nilson for a Bravo Award. The letter was read and
Commissioners agreed that Barb should be honored with a Bravo Award. MOVED BY KYES,
SECONDED BY O'HALLORAN. COMMISSIONERS CONCUR, MOTION CARRIED. Commissioner
O'Halloran will assist Commissioner Lund with invitations. Jennifer will explore dates to present at a City
Council meeting in the beginning of October.
#3- Carco Theatre Guest Artists: Faith Williams is currently on display. Carolyn Buck, Nature & Travel
photographer, will be on display starting in October. No progress on an artist reception schedule.
#4-Resource Development Financial Assistance: Two additional organizations have submitted request
for funds: Renton River Days and Renton Youth Symphony Orchestra (RYSO). A more thorough report
will be sought from RYSO.
#5-Update By-Laws:Commissioner Lund discussed the need to update the by-laws and committees,
which were last updated in 2002. Commissioner Reingold volunteered to serve on an ad-hoc committee
with Commissioners Pepper and Lund and Jennifer to draft updates for Commission review.
#6- 1% forArt: The City's Finance Department has reported that the fund currently has $121,357. It was
recommended that the 1% for Art Committee (to be discussed under New Business) begin to develop
project ideas. The 2"d & Main development has slowed down, but private-public partnership for public art
will still be part of this project.
#7- Commission Budget: The Commission reviewed the current budget with no comment.
#8- Website: No updates necessary. (See Cultural Registry under new business.)
#9- Current Art Projects:
Welcome to Renton Sign: No action on the building of the deck at Tiffany Park.
Burnett Park: A park and artwork rededication will be held on Saturday, October 11, 9:00 a.m. Parks
Division has asked for a Commissioner to present a certificate of appreciation to the artist. Commissioner
O'Halloran will present the certificate.
Herons: No update at this time.
#10-Maintenance/Repair Work:
A new quote to reattach the"Homework Comes FirsY'sculpture by Martha Pettigrew was received and
work will progress. The repair will be paid for by the Facilities Division.
NEW BUSINESS:
Cultural Registry: Commissioner Lund shared information he found while researching the Des Moines
Arts Commission regarding a cultural registry for local groups and artists. The group agreed that the
Commission should post a similar registry on the City's website. MOVED BY O'HALLORAN,
SECONDED BY REINGOLD. COMMISSIONERS CONCUR, MOTION CARRIED. Jennifer will pursue
creating a Renton Municipal Arts Commission form based on Des Moines format and post on the web.
Renton FilmFrenzy: The Community Marketing Campaign, responsible for the"Ahead of the Curve"
marketing of the City, is working on a film making competition. Commissioners Pepper and Lund have
attended planning meetings as well as Jennifer. The 50-hour competition will be held October 17— 19,
where people will create short films (4 minutes or less). A judges panel will select the best 10 to be

presented at the Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, October 28, at 7:00 p.m. Ail other
films will be showcased in Downtown venues on Wednesday, October 29, and Thursday, October 30.
The planning group has requested two items: 1)a representative from the Commission to serve as a
judge, and 2)financial assistance for an honorarium for poster development ($250). Commissioner Lund
volunteered to be the judge and the honorarium was MOVED BY LUND, SECONDED BY KYES.
COMMISSIONERS CONCUR, MOTION CARRIED
Commission Retreat: Commissioner Pepper distributed a four-question survey for Commissioners to
complete to help prepare for a retreat. Lynn Bohart, Executive Director of the Renton Community
Foundation, has agreed to facilitate the retreat. Dates were discussed and Tuesday, January 13, from
4:30—8:30 p.m.was the top choice. This date will be confirmed with Lynn; Jennifer will see if the
Conferencing Center or HR Training Room is available.
ADJOURNMENT: The September 2, 2008, meeting was adjourned at 6:20 p.m. The next meeting will
be on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at 4:30 p.m.
