MOVED BY O'HALLORAN, SECONDED BY KYES. COMMISSIONERS CONCUR, MOTION CARRIED. CORRESPONDENCE: Commissioner Lund distributed mail to RMAC, which were miscellaneous materials from various art groups in outlying areas. MASTER PLAN DISCUSSION: Commissioners O'Halloran, Lund and Peterson shared information about their research on other arts commissions and councils from Auburn, Federal Way, Des Moines, Port Angeles and Edmonds. A template of questions will be compiled based on Commissioner O'Halloran's research and shared with the entire Commission for future research. Jennifer Davis Hayes presented a draft scope of work for Commissioners to review and comment. A plan would create 5 years of recommendations with the commission revisiting during and at the end. Commissioner Lund suggested that the consultant hired could be brought back in at a certain step to help redirect the plan. Commissioner Middlebrooks suggested contacting Char Baker regarding the previous art planning effort in Renton—Renton Arts Plan Together. OLD BUSINESS: Local Arts Orqanization Updates: Arts Unlimited: Commissioner Peterson reported that the Arts Unlimited Gallery will be at the Return to Renton Car Show. Allied Arts: Commissioner Middlebrooks reported that Allied Arts will now administer the Randy Rockhill fund, in coordination with the family. This entails writing checks to recipients and a more active role in applications. SoCo Culture: Commissioners O'Halloran reported that SoCo Culture now has 66 members. CARCO Theatre: Vincent Orunda reported that the summer teen musical will be performing at the Return to Renton Car Show. Municipal Arts Commission Min� y� Page 2 of 3 May 7, 2008 Renton Annual Art Show: Commissioner Middlebrooks passed around a sign-up sheet to volunteer. Commission Meetinq Dates and Times: The Commission was reminded that starting in September, the meetings will be held on Tuesdays at 4:30 pm in the Council Conference Room. Commission Vacancies: Commissioners Pepper, Lund and Kyes will interview 10 candidates for the 3 vacancies on July 10 and July 15. Eduardo Mendonca rescinded his application due to other commitments. Applications are available for review by any commissioners. The committee will bring a recommendation back to the next meeting. Renton River Davs booth: A sign up sheet was circulated for the second time for Commissioners to volunteer at the RMAC booth. Action Item List: #1- Commission Budgef: No new updates. The Renton Annual Art Show financial assistance award of $500 and RMAC Prize Award for the show of$500 is being processed. #2-MasterPlan forRMAC: No additional discussion. #3- Carco Theatre Guest Artists: Student art from Sierra Heights Elementary is in place until August, which is highlighted in today's edition of the Renton Reporter. Vincent mentioned the display case is now empty. Vincent also reported that Carco Theatre lobby display lights will be updated. Commissioner Everett and Peterson will work on an artisYs reception in the fall. Vincent mentioned Sundays would be best. #4-Maintenance/Repair Work: All maintenance work contracted for this year has been completed. The fountain by the library is now working. #5-Resource Development Financial Assistance: Award letters have been sent. Awaiting reimbursement requests (already received from Renton Annual Art Show.) Printed Material: Commissioners reviewed the final draft of the Public Art and Biennial Report documents. No changes were suggested. The City will print 2500 of the Public Art brochure and 1000 of the Biennial report for distribution at Renton River Days and other venues. New Member Packet: Jennifer will send Commissioners a draft list of items to include in the new member packet for Commissioner comments. #6-Bravo Award: Commissioners reviewed the latest draft of process for the Bravo Award. Commissioner Middlebrooks disagreed with the process and believes it should not be a regimented process. She also stated that someone on the Commission would be aware of an individual worthy of this award without opening it up to public nominations. A lengthy discussion occurred and it was decided that a committee would be formed to develop a recommendation to bring to the next meeting. Commissioners Middlebrooks, Reingold, Everett, O'Halloran and Vincent will serve on this committee. #7- Website: Has been updated. #8- 1% forArt: No additional information on 2"d & Main or Wayfinding projects. Commissioner O'Halloran completed the research for the missing plaques and Jennifer is awaiting a quote from the vendor. #9- Current Art Projects: Welcome to Renton Sign: No new update. Burnett Park: A picture of the refinished artwork at Renton Technical College was passed around. The artwork will be placed at the park by the end of July. � � Municipal Arts Commission Minut,,,,�,; .,�,,, Page 3 of 3 May 7,2008 Herons: The City's Parks Division trimmed the trees around the scuipture. Vincent said the sculpture is easier to see. All Commissioners are encouraged to view the area again. NEW BUSINESS: Commissioner Peterson was elected vice-chair of the Commission. Jennifer presented the preliminary idea of the Community Marketing Committee to host a film competition in the fall. Filmmakers would be given a set of instructions to include in the short film and have a set amount of time to film, edit and turn into the competition (approximately 72 hours.) The Arts Commission has been invited to participate in planning meetings. Commissioner Lund and Peterson expressed interest in the planning phase.
