HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/05/2008 - Minutes , , � � � RENTON MUNICIPAL ARTS COMMISSION MARCH 5, 2008 MINUTES C�TY OF RENTON �;a� 1 4 20Q8 t;ITY CLERK+S OF�ICE Commissioners: Jerri Everett Doug Kyes Fred Lund Linda Middlebrooks Pat Pepper, Chair Britt Peterson Evelyn Reingold Ellie Simpson Absent: Dalia Amin,Youth Representative Kristi Hand Mike O'Halloran Staff: Jennifer Davis Hayes, Community Development Project Manager Gloria Gamba, Secretary Vincent Orduna, Cultural Arts Coordinator Peter Renner, Facilities Director Judith Subia, Administrative Secretary Guests: Kevin Kaiser, Artistic Director, The Evergreen City Ballet Andi Bryndza, Rehearsal Teacher, The Evergreen City Ballet CALL TO ORDER: Pat Pepper, Chair, called the meeting to order at 8:06 a.m. INTRODUCTION OF SPECIAL GUESTS: Kevin Kaiser, Artistic Director, for The Evergreen City Ballet, along with Andi Bryndza, Ballet Mistress,mentioned the ballet is performing the world renown Swan Lake at the IKEA Performing Arts Center in Renton on April 11, 12, and 13. Tickets may be obtained by phoning 1-877-548-3237. One of Kevin's priorities is to bring a higher level of awareness to promote the arts in Renton. The Evergreen City Ballet hopes to increase enrollment for children and is developing outreach to students. He indicated the need to partner with the Renton School District (RSD). Doug Kyes will work with RSD, although transportation remains an issue. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: In Diane Wagner's absence, the January 2008 minutes have not been presented. The Commission requested the January minutes be approved at the Apri12, 2008, meeting. Linda made a motion to approve the February 2008 minutes as submitted, second by Fred, all in favor, motion carried. CORRESPONDENCE: Ellie distributed information from various art commissions in outlying areas as well as flyers,post cards, etc. Ellie also read a letter from James Tierney, Renton Civic Theatre,requesting a$1 S00 grant to fund a publicity campaign to increase their season subscriptions. The Commission decided t� �ut this letter on hold until the Request r -Proposal letters are ' ' sent and responses rec�ed. ''� +� ACTION ITEMS: ➢ Website Information will be updated. ➢ Second &Main Development Project is moving forward. ➢ The authorization to conduct a Master Plan for RMAC is in the process. An agenda bill and ordinance will be submitted to Council in March. ➢ Carco Theatre Guest Artists—Britt will find an artist within two weeks. ➢ Maintenance and Repair of Artwork—Peter mentioned that it is in progress, weather permitting. ➢ Welcome to Renton Sign—Installation will hopefully be complete by late summer. ➢ City Center Parking Garage will be deleted from Action Items, replaced by Resource Development, and assigned to Fred, Evelyn, Doug, Mike, and V.J. A Burnett Linear Park Artnis scheduled for summer. ��� t�� Linda went to Olympia to lobby for the Sunset Tax. She explained there was a large presence in favor of the tax. The Sunset Tax would end the hotel/motel tax after 2012. If the bill is not passed, funding will not be available for the arts. NEW BUSINESS: Evelyn reported that Mike, Fred, Doug and she met to discuss awarding RMAC 2008 funds to performing arts organizations. T'hey composed a sample letter listing specific criteria and the process for applying for organizational grants. It was decided that Fred, Evelyn, Doug, and Jennifer will finalize the letter. V.J. recommended an actual application accompany the letter. The information will also be on the web; the contact person listed will be Jennifer. The deadline for submission is scheduled for April 30, 2008. Fred explained the Grant Station that is available at the Renton Main Library. This search engine covers procedures, content, style, and provides tips on developing a competitive grant request. The information provided is lengthy and Peter asked that Gloria scan the document and email the Commissioners, since the City is involved in a Paper Reduction Program. -� DOug mentioned the Seattle Arts Museum(SAM) is offering a new school outreach program for K-12 students in King County. Two events are scheduled. Roman Art from the Louvre Special Exhibition is scheduled for February 26 thru May 11. To register, phone 206.903.5296. On March 15th from 10:00 a.m. unti12:00 p.m. is a free Making Rome Relevant—Using Ancient Art in the Classroom. Participants will receive teaching materials and credit for four Washington State clock hours. Visit teacherworkshop@seattleartmuseum.org. V. J. informed the Commission that there is an invitation from Julia Patterson, Director of 4Culture, to attend a meeting on March Sth, 3:00 p.m., 12`h Floor of the King County Court House, for all South County cities to learn more about funding opportunities through 4Culture. OLD BUSINESS: Doug will bring samples of previous Bravo Awards to the next meeting. The Commission would like to reinstate the awards this year. Thc�`nount is to be determined. `"''' Other: Pat explained that Wesley Van Doren has expressed an interest in serving on the Renton Municipal Arts Commission. Pat will phone him and see if he is able to attend morning meetings. On behalf of the Commission, Pat expressed their sincere thanks to Peter Renner for his assistance and support of the Commission.
