Municipal Arts Commissioners Absent: Dalia Amin,Sarah Eldridge, Doug Kyes,Wesley Van Doren and Denise Zullig City Staff Present:Jennifer Davis Hayes, Community& Economic Development Vincent Orduna, Cultural Arts Coordinator Vivienne Lietz,Administrative Secretary, Community& Economic Development CALL TO ORDER: Commission Chair Pepper called the meeting to order at 4:30 pm. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: COMMISSIONER BRITT MCKENZIE NOTED TO CLARIFY THE FRED MEYER HONORING POLE SHOULD BE INSTALLED FOR THE RENTON HIGH SCHOOL CENTENNIAL. PETER HARTLEY MOTIONED TO APPROVE THE OCTOBER MINUTES AS AMENDED, SECONDED BY COMMISSIONER FRED LUND. COMMISSIONERS CONCURED, MOTION CARRIED. Commissioner Pat Pepper welcomed Peter Hartley to the Arts Commission. PUBLIC ART PIECE OF THE MONTH: Peter Hartley gave clues on a piece of art. Fred Lund asked if it was at the transit center,which it is, "The River" and "Timepiece." He mentioned that 4Culture commissioned the art and that some repair is necessary to the reader board. Jennifer explained that the Commission has worked with 4Culture and the display cabinets had just been cleaned. Sarah Eldridge is scheduled for next month. CORRESPONDENCE AND ANNOUNCEMENTS: Commissioner Lund distributed mail highlighting local art events. Page 2 of 3 '"'�"` November 2,2010 Artist Forum: Britt McKenzie asked commissioners to send any contact information of any local artists as she will be doing outreach to collect their opinions before moving forward. Posters: Fred Lund got two bids for the Downtown poster project. Linda Middlebrooks asked if we could print and laminate at the City–the posters could be cut into sections and then pieced back together in the displays and this might be a less expensive option. Track lighting at Carco Theatre: $58 for each unit, at least 8 or 10 new lighting units are needed. Pat Pepper questioned why the Arts Commission is responsible and Britt McKenzie explained that the track lighting was only installed for the artists' display. Fred Lund asked if we could purchase a less expensive light fitting without the transformer. Britt McKenzie recommended we get another bid and check with facilities to see if they would be willing to purchase some of them. Fred Lund has three alternate light fixtures that he will take to Carco and check if they're interchangeable with the current system. Carco Artist: Next is mid-November, reception is December 17. Artist Showcase List for 2011 is almost ready. Resource Development: VJ Orduna commented that Pat Pepper and Doug Kyes did a phenomenal job speaking at the Parks Commission meeting. Pat Pepper felt they were interested in working with the Arts Commission. Community Services is open to offering a building for an Arts Center but there would need to be a business plan,volunteers and everything else in place for it to begin. We need to define what the ask is for the presentation;Jennifer Davis Hayes reiterated, "How are�willing to help?" Community Services Committee: Briefing on November 8, recommend adding money to bring total budget for Rainier Avenue Gateway Project to$50,000. Caldwell Studio tour, Saturday or Sunday, November 13 or 14. Jennifer Davis Hayes passed around a signup sheet. Parks. Recreation.Open Space and Natural Resources Plan: Britt McKenzie is on the steering committee and updated the status. Committee discussed the benefits of Coulon Park and what Renton might be missing. There needs to be more sports, indoor options and options for diversity—such as an indoor running track. The process will update the current plan to benefit our diverse community. Pat Pepper liked the idea of bringing temporary art events to the community. lennifer Davis Hayes suggested the idea of moving the art we already have to a more visual location or possibly rotating the art. Look at ways to extend culture to the outlaying areas. Peter Hartley asked if during this process the Parks division wanted art in other parks, might they be willing to pay for it to be moved or to be installed. She asked commissioners to offer any additional input that she can take to the table. Peter Hartley suggested offering ideas of where art might be more beneficial in an alternate location. Retreat: Pat Pepper passed around a Master Plan discussion document in preparation for the retreat. She asked commissioners to think about how they would want to be involved. What is important to each Commissioner? What are Commissioners passionate about? Britt McKenzie suggested we should focus on the first two strategies. Pat Pepper noted that#5 was important to many. Peter Hartley stated if we could muster enough leadership we could do all five. Evelyn Reingold felt making connections to local businesses was very important. Business plans are important and VJ Orduna reiterated that when applying for grants that a business plan is required more and more. Jennifer Davis Hayes mentioned that she and Suzanne Dale Estey had been invited to the IKEA Performing Arts Center steering committee in December. Discussion ensued on each commissioner's personal choice for helping implement the Master Plan. The discussion for the retreat will be to prioritize our focus and begin forming committees. � � Renton Municipal Arts Commissioi utes ,�, Page 3 of 3 '"°"'� November 2,2010 Renton FilmFrenzv: Britt McKenzie stated that the challenges with the disks made it difficult to judge the films. Partnership with Renton School District: There's an opportunity to judge the Reflections program on December 2. Commission Proiects: Fred Meyer Honoring Pole is coming along. Combat Paper:Jennifer Davis Hayes gave an overview working with the Compass Veterans Center,could be a galvanizing project. She asked Commissioners if they would be willing take the lead on this project, no response was given. Commission Bud�et: Not all reports have been received from grant recipients. Peter Hartley made a motion that if Fred Lund determines the less expensive lights work with the existing lighting he can purchase up to $300 in replacement fixtures. Pat Pepper seconded. Unable to finalize the motion as a quorum was not available at the time. NEW BUSINESS: Youth Position: Dalia has sent recruitment information out to schools with an application deadline of November 15. Dalia Amin, Fred Lund & Evelyn Reingold will be on the interview panel.
