Project Description: The applicant is requesting Special Administrative Fence Permit Approval
in order to construct a 6-foot solid cedar fence with a lattice inlay within the side yard along street
building setback. The applicant wishes to increase the size of the "back yard" of their property.
The proposed fence would be of the same design as that located along the interior side yard of
the property (south side). The finished side of the fence is to be oriented to the street (NE 6th St.)
and would not be located within the sight distance triangle nor would interfere with other
driveways located along NE 6th St. The applicant is proposing to locate the fence 30 inches from
the back of sidewalk. The proposal includes a cedar bark bed installed with columnar junipers
placed at the mid-point of each fence segment for a total of nine junipers. The cedar fence would
include ornamental post tops and an arched gate would be located at the northeast corner of the
property.
The property is zoned Residential - 8 (R-8) and contains a single-family residence. The front
yard is oriented to Olympia Ave. NE and the side yard along a street fronts NE 6th Street.

1. Applicant shall be required to increase the amount of landscaping within the planting strip
including additional groundcover and shrubs. The applicant shall submit a revised
planting plan to the Development Services Project Manager for review and approval prior
to installing the fence and no later than 30 days from the date of issuance of this permit.
2. The applicant shall design and locate the fence to provide permanent access to all public
utilities, meters and cable boxes located along the NE 6th Street frontage.

APPLICATION FOR A FENCE PERMIT
Attached is the application to move the fencing around the back yard of the lot of
579 Olympia Ave NE, Renton, WA. This proposed fence would increase the size of the
back yard of this property. The proposed fence would be identical to the existing fence
enclosing the south side ofthe yard. The new fence line would go to the North-East
comer of the existing house. The North side of the fence would be extended out to 30"
from the sidewalk. This proposed fence line is placed away from the existing intersection
of Olympia Ave NE and 6th Ave, that no view obstruction would be introduced. The
fence is 6 feet high at the highest point, but the lattice top gives an appearance of a lower
fence. On the sidewalk side of the fence the sod would be removed and a cedar bark bed
would be put in place. Columnar cedars would be placed at the mid points of each fence
segment for ornamentation. Ornamental tops would be placed on each of the fence post,
and an arched gate would be placed at the North-East comer.

. PURPOSE: The purpose of the special fence permit process is to' allow a re~idential property owner
the opportunity to request City approval C?f it fence in excess of 4-feet in height. Qut not exceeding 6-feet.

Compliments the environment it serves In an aesthetically pleasing manner;
Does not present a hazard to vehicular or pedestrian traffic. and
Is located outside of Right-of-Way on private property.
FENCES ELIGIBLE FOR SPECIAL PERMITS: Fe~ces over 4. feet tall, but not ~xceeding 6
feet in height. located within any street setback are eligible for a Special Fence Permit from the City of
Renton.· ;Special Fence Permits mayor may not be approved. based on the evaluation criteri,a listed
below. It is the responsibility of the applicant to justify the ~ppropriateness of the request to the,
satisfaction of the Development Services Division. FenCes located within Clear Vision Areas are not
eligible to receive a Special Fence Permit.
REVIEW PROCESS: Once a complete application package and the required fee are accepted, the
Development Services Division will begin review of the application materials: It will take the Development
Services Division approximately two weeks to make a decision on the Special Fence Permit request.
Applicants will be contacted as soon as a decision has been made regarding the permit.
FENCE INSTALLATION: If the permit is approved, the applicant is responsible for .installing the
fence in conformance with approved plans. No work may be done prior to permit issuance ..

• Increased setbacks from the adjacent sidewalk;

• Orientation of the finished face of the fence toward the street; and,
• Other comparable construction or design methods.
