CORRESPONDENCE AND ANNOUNCEMENTS: The items of interest were passed around for review. Renton Municipal Arts Commission'lofinutes Page 2 of 4 June 7,2011 Google Calendar:Sarah Eldridge gave a tutorial overview of the calendar and documents, how to share events and navigate your way around. In addition, she reviewed the information necessary to send to Jennifer if you wish to post an event on Facebook. The City of Renton's Facebook page currently has 4793 friends and this is a great resource for RMAC to reach out to the community. Not just art events, community events also. Sarah asked what happens to the secretary position now that Fred is gone. Jennifer explained that Jerri was willing to be the correspondence secretary and send thank you and congratulations cards to those in the community involved in arts and culture. Please send her articles or other ideas for people to send these cards to. The Executive Committee will also explore other possible changes such as the committee structures and youth position. We will continue to discuss and make updates to the bylaws accordingly. OLD BUSINESS: Local Arts Aencv: 4Culture funding has been approved in the legislature. The local LAA meeting was in SeaTac and there was a tour of the botanical garden. They had a discussion on which department the arts commission sits in different cities. Jennifer passed around information on Arts Crush. There is a possibility of Renton being a hub for this event—relates to having two or more events during Arts Crush, we need to make a decision in the next month. Cities have different ways of funding the arts, Issaquah has a theatre tax that goes back to the arts and Kent does a $2 per person tax. The next LAA meeting is July 28th in Sammamish. Doug Kyes mentioned an email Jennifer had passed along from Karen Abel, Executive Director of artEAST. She is interested in speaking to the Arts Center committee about art centers in Kirkland and Issaquah and possible collaboration. ACTION ITEM LIST ADHOC COMMITTEES: Renton River Davs: Doug shared with the group their idea of people drawing around their hand and he was proposing we connect it to in some way to establishing an Arts Center. It was suggested to broaden the topic and focus on the Master Plan and not just one aspect of it. Evelyn will write something up to connect the hand drawing to the Master Plan. Commissioners will sign up for three-hour shifts and cover Friday,Saturday&Sunday. Action items:Print directions for the activity and RMAC poal's on poster boards. lennifer received an email from Vicki Hart asking if we would consider splitting the $500 prize for the Renton Annual Arts show to two prizes of$250 each. The Commission preferred to leave the prize as is as we have a strong commitment to draw artists to the show. It used to be a purchase prize and the piece would be part of the RMAC collection until storage became an issue and the prize was changed. The annual art inspection by Art Tech will happen here at City Hall soon and we'll get more information. Action items: Denise Zullip is interested in helpinp to showcase City art at different places and Sarah Eldridpe is interested in cataloqinp the art. COMMISSION PROJECTS: Carco Theatre Lobbv Displav: The current artist display of Debra Houston has been successfully to date. The next artist is Deborah Haggman and her work will be installed lune 27 and will host a July 9, 5—7 Renton Municipal Arts Commissionlnutes Page 3 of 4 June 7,2011 pm. Britt asked for another volunteer to be her alternate if she was not available to hang the artwork. No one stepped up. We need to modify the artist application to reflect the changes needed. Librarv Desin Committee: There is nothing new to report on the library design. Since Fred Lund volunteered to be on the Highlands Library Design Committee,we need another Commissioner to represent the Arts Commission. Jennifer explained the role of the Commissioner for this project. Action item: If confirmed as a Commissioners, Brook will represent the Commission on the Hiphlands Desiqn Committee. Henrv Moses HonorinPole: The Henry Moses Honoring Pole was re-dedicated on Saturday, May 7 and it was a great event. The Honoring Pole is located by the garden entrance at Fred Meyer on Rainier Ave. Action item: Fred bepan work to pet a plapue made;Jennifer is continuinp the process and will coordinate with the other stakeholders. Parks. Recreation,Open Space and Natural Resources Plan: A Steering Committee meeting was held last week and the projects are currently being prioritized. Please consider attending the upcoming community meetings to rate the priorities on June 28 at Cascade Elementary or June 29 at Renton Community Center, both workshops from 6—8 pm. Peter Hartley asked how the arts are being included in this plan and Britt felt that it depended on each location on how it was being reviewed. There is a huge range of projects proposed in the plan and art is represented. For example, one idea is for an interpretive center at the Blue Heron Sanctuary and that could include a 1%of Art project. Many of the projects would require grants to implement. Some properties will require environmental mitigation. An interesting opportunity for the Commission is to try something a little more interesting such as they did at Waterworks Park. Sports and soccer fields are a big ask from the community, as well as responsible use of our open space and stewardship. SIFF/Renton FilmFrenzv: SIFF was very successful, opening night was packed and the gala was wonderful. The committee did a superb job of working with SIFF. We hope they come back in 2012. Action item: Sarah Eldridpe volunteered to serve as a iudqe for the FilmFrenzy in October. ' Combat Paper: Two 3-day workshops were held at the Compass Center. Peter was disappointed that the art work didn't get hung at Luther's Table as promised. They did give a demonstration at the Spring Festival which went very well. COMMISSION BUDGET: We paid the artists for the Combat Paper project and we will submit this for reimbursement to 4Culture from whom we received a grant for this project. Restoration of the Arts has a date scheduled in August at Carco Theatre. Jennifer requested an invite for the commissioners for a rehearsal or the actual event. Pat Pepper asked if the Wings&Wheels artists have been paid, it will be paid 60 days after installation. Pat asked how we could promote the trail to the public and the community and suggestions include using tools like Facebook and through the school district. Action item:Sarah will write up a blurb and start the ball rollinp with the school district to promote the trail to students. Leislative Reception: Liz Stewart was unable to attend this meeting but has requested through Jennifer that the Arts Commission host, in collaboration with the Renton History Museum,a "Thank You Reception"for state legislators regarding the passage of permanent funding for 4Culture. The date would be lune 30 and held at the History Museum. Liz will work with Bistro Box to cater the event. Commissioners agreed to do this and supported the idea to assist with food costs. EVELYN REINGOLD MOTIONED TO PAY FOR 50%OF THE FOOD COSTS UP TO $250.00,SECONDED BY DOUG KYES. Renton Municipal Arts CommissionlVlinutes Page 4 of 4 June 7,2011 COMMISSIONERS CONCURED, MOTION CARRIED. Please attend and share your enthusiasm about the a rts. PerforminArts Committee: They are creating a list of concrete priorities prior to next meeting on Monday,August 1, at Carco Theatre. The minutes are posted on the Google calendar. MASTER PLAN IMPLEMENTATION: Each committee is continuing to discuss priorities within committees and should begin to think about what and how to report to the City Council and community for this year's annual report, which should be done in August or September. We are still trying to figure out how to manage all the projects. Peter felt that we should discuss committee collaboration during Arts Commission meeting and keep the detailed discussion of specific projects to the committee meetings. Rainier Ave Proiect with Benson Shaw: Jennifer gave a brief overview of the project. This is his second design review. Benson began with a rendering of the NE and NW corners of Rainier Avenue at the intersection of Grady Way. On the NE corner there will be 15 globes. Two kinds of lighting are being looked at, regular lighting or LED lighting which KPG has researched but are expensive. Benson showed a piece of art to the group to give them a good visual of how the globes would look. He showed various designs for the globes which would create interest and he has come up with a working title of"Going Global." His suggestion was to incorporate different designs on each globe,or a series of designs rather than just plain blue. He would like to keep the glass blue to allow for the glowing feel we wanted to achieve at night. Blue and Silver are the colors he is using. Currently there is no money for the NW corner and as yet the project has not yet gone out to bid. Denise noted that we need to address the lights and make a decision on which kind to use. Evelyn liked the title of Going Global and felt it connected to the City's Ahead of the Curve. Pat noted that the Commission really likes what they are seeing and how Benson is working with KPG. Next week we will brief the Council on the current design and after that we will look towards connecting with the community. This will be a long-term project as the Rainier Ave improvements will not start until late 2011 or early 2012 and it would be 18 to 24 months until the public art is installed. Adiournment: The June 7 2011, meeting was adjourned at 6:40 p.m. The next meeting will be held on July 5, 2011,at 4:30 pm. . . (___• / Z l/L Patricia Pepper, Cha r
