Municipal Arts Commissioners Present: Ben Andrews,Jaris English,Jerri Everett, Peter Hartley, Bill Huls,

Guests present: City Councilmember Ed Prince, Natalie Gress(Arts Commission applicant), Rhonda
Juliano (Renton Community Chorus), Mery Velastegui(Arts Commission applicant), Betty Childers(Arts
Commission Applicant)and Andee Jorgenson (Allied Arts of Renton)
CALL TO ORDER: Commission Chair McKenzie called the meeting to order at 4:30 pm.
G U ESTS:
Councilmember Ed Prince thanked the Commissioners for their service and spoke of his support for arts
� and culture locally. He mentioned he is a founding member of the Next Curve that has supported arts
and culture with grants for the past two years.
Rhonda Juliano presented a complete summary of her project"The Renton Community Chorus." She
has 38 members signed up and hopes for more before the beginning of rehearsals in September. She
hopes their first concert will be in December.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Commissioner Britt McKenzie presented the minutes for January to the group
and asked if anyone had any comments. Doug Keyes motioned to approve the minutes,seconded by

PUBLIC ART PIECE OF THE MONTH: Jerri Everett gave a report on the art piece "Donkey Running Away
..
to the Mines by Richard Beyer. Purchased with 1%money in 1984, it is located in Tonkin Park in
Downtown Renton. Ben Andrews will be presenting at the March meeting.
CORRESPONDENCE AND ANNOUNCEMENTS: lennifer Davis Hayes passed around the folder for people
to review. Other announcements include:
• Downtown Library Open House on February 15, 5-7 pm, at the Community Center.

• RMAC is hosting the 4Culture Local Arts Agency(LAA) meeting on May 24,9 am to 12:30 pm,
location to be determined. [Editor's Note: Renton Civic Theatre has been reserved for this meeting.]
• Artist reception February 25, 5 pm at Carco Theater.
• "Hay Fever"will be open February 17 at the Renton Civic Theater.

Arts Commission Committees
Resource Development: We have received five proposals for grants. Peter Hartley asked about
extending the deadline for applications. Doug Kyes made a motion to extend the date, amended by VJ
Orduna to make the date February 17. Motion was seconded. Commissioners concurred, motion
carried.
We will be in touch with applicants from 2011 with this information.

Rainier Ave: No action �
Garden Ave N: We have$20,000 to invest in this project. The Arts Commission has proposed to move
the sculpture"Emerging"from its location at Carco Park to the corner of Garden Avenue N and Park
Avenue North. The cost will be $8,280 and will include the foundation and the pedestal. Moved and
seconded to support this proposal. Commissioners concurred, motion carried. The Time Capsule will
remain at Carco Park.
Communications& Marketin�: Spring Equinox will be March 22, 6 to 8 pm, at Harambee. Volunteers
needed to promote and organize.
Performin�Arts In Renton (PAIR): PAIR now has a web site. Will RMAC reimburse Kelly Anderson,
$9.99,the cost of the domain name? Moved and seconded to do so. Commissioners concurred, motion
carried.
Art Center:_ No action. Next meeting, February 16,5—7 pm, location to be determined.

Sprin�Arts Equinox: No action
Renton River Davs Booth: VJ Orduna and Bill Huls will have full report at the March meeting.
Commission Recruitment: Interviews are in progress. CLOSED SESSION: Discussion of applicants.
Moved and seconded to approve Jon Schindehette, Paul Hebron, and Natalie Gress as new
Commissioners. Commissioners concurred, motion carried.

librarv Architecture Desi�n Team: There was an Open House in the Highlands where community
members were invited to provide input. Design is progressing on both libraries.
SIFF/Renton FilmFrenzv: January planning meeting cancelled due to the snow. The next meeting is
February 16, 3 pm. SIFF will return to Renton May 18—May 24.
NEW BUSINESS
2012—2013 Goals and Uqdated Brochure: Draft will be available at the March meeting. Each
Commissioner should send Jennifer one goal by February 20.
4Culture Site Specific Art: The Arts Commission applied for Site Specific Art grants to help bring new
performances and other cultural experiences to various Renton art groups. We will hear soon if we will
receive matching funds to pursue.
Earthworks Bicyde Tour,June 2: The route includes Earthworks in Kent,SeaTac and Renton. I�
Wayfinding is being designed. Jennifer is serving on the panel and welcomes Commission involvement.
4Culture-LAA Meeting: Britt and Jennifer attended the meeting in Auburn. Heard from the King County
Parks Artist in Residence about creating an art plan for trails throughout King County. 4Culture will put
out a 'call for screens'that the Arts Commission should consider that will bring media art to Renton.
The next meeting is May 24, 9:30 am—12:30 pm, location to be determined.
Adjournment: The February 7, 2012, meeting was adjourned at 6:30 pm. The next meeting will be held
on March 6, 2012, in the Conferencing Center at 4:30 pm.
