Brown, Mary Burns-Haley, Ben Chen��SOFFICE Cochran-Reep, Dorothy Cook, Eric Eastberg, Mary Ann Ellingson, Mary Lou Gilbert, Douglas Gregory, Ruby Griffin, Elaine Koehler, Emilie McCue, Sandra Polley, Rose Warren. STAFF:Shawn Daly, Debbie Little,Tim Williams. President Ben Cheney called the meeting to order at 10:02 A.M., attendance was taken. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as corrected. , TREASURER 5 REPORT--Treasurer, rose Warren, reported the following: Bank Statement $13,482.26 Emergency fund 203.25 Petty Cash 20.23 Forgotten Badge fund 6.00 SENIOR SERVICES COORDINATOR'S REPORT—Shawn Daly • Each member will receive an updated copy of the By-law changes. • Received $50 from Carolyn and Alan Brungie family, in memory of Clarice Kyle. Clarice was here from th.e day we opened and a dedicated volunteer in the Nutrition Program. • River Days this year will be start Thursday,July 21St, with our annual lunch at RCC. Last year we did the first movie series showing"The Blind Side;" (a football theme with games, hot dogs, ice cream, pop and prizes.) This year a movie called, "Grease;" (a 50's theme serving pizzas, ice cream, pop, play games and do the limbo.) Our major sponsor, "Sam's Club," fell through. Looking into sponsoring our own movie. We have one sponsor, Local 2170, donating $350.00. Asking the Advisory Board for a donation of$450.00. It was moved by Mary Burns- Haley, second by Emilie McCue to donate $450 towards River Days Movie. Motion carried. • Dorothy Cook gave a list of questions and comments to Shawn to answer from her Ceramic class. Comments stated, "thank you for providing us with a lovely center. I personally go to the center daily and appreciate the staff and all the services they provide for us." "Thank you for providing us the best senior center in the State. Keep up the good work." Questions and answers—1J Will the craft room be used for the Craft Bazaar? No. During last year's budget the Craft Bazaar was to be cut due to it being a financial loss. Staff brought it back by using the 50 six foot tables available in-house. Craft Bazaar will be on Saturday, October 29th. 2) Is the Senior Center ready for an emergency? Tough question. Yes and no. We h�ope we are ready for an emergency. Staff has been trained properly as a whole. The earthquake in Japan brought a thought of what would happen if we had another earthquake; it makes you start thinking. I contacted the Fire Department to have them train us in a massive evacuation or a simple fire drill. If an earthquake happens, staffs job is to evacuate the building. Problem begins with 300 participants outside the building in the cold; what do you do? Until the Fire Department declares the building structurally safe no one can re-enter the • . center. The City Emergency Operations Center is fully supplied. Second part of question, "are supplies available for the three days recommended?" Not sure if there is. Depends on day disaster should hit. There is tons of ineals-on-wheels food available in the cooler for clients and have 5-6 cases of water upstairs. 3J Will the homeless be let in to sleep if the weather drops? No. During operating hours they are welcome. If it gets real cold the city does a good job providing warming shelters. 4J Why doesn't the staff eat in the lunch room? Staff is at work eight hours daily, each staffs lunch hour fluctuates and during their lunch hour they like to get out. 5J Would it be possible for seniors to pick up their own food in the kitchen in order to be sure it stays hot? Use to do that; lines were long and people complained. We have a large number of handicapped seniors. I asked them to serve in more of a restaurant setting. I will make sure the dish warmers are in working condition. • This week asking seniors to indicate their age when signing in. We want to track the ages of our seniors attending the Renton Senior Activity Center, so we can better serve them through programs, grants and funding needs in the future. • Knights of Columbus free pancake breakfast on Saturday was successful serving over 200 seniors. • On Saturday I received a call from RCC that the greenhouse was 105 degrees. Warner Curl from maintenance was able to cool it down and then I was able to water the wilted plants. • Debbie and I have a meeting with Michael Nolan on Thursday to fine tune fabric selections for the Library Lounge remodel. Michael Nolan is scheduled to attend the April 4tn meeting. He has a real nice proposal to present;you will be impressed. Doing everything from the lighting to carpets and in between. • Mary Ann Ellingson handed me a Form 99T electronically. What does this mean? This form distinguishes the Advisory Board as a non-profit organization. Needs renewing yearly at a cost of$10. The 99T Form was submitted last year on 7/19/10 and signed off. • Mayor's Volunteer Party at Piazza on March 30; a Monte Carlo theme. President Ben Cheney appointed the following to be on the Audit Committee; Elaine Koehler, as Chairperson, Ruby Griffin and Dorothy Cook. They will report back after the audit. RECREATION DIRECTOR'S REPORT—Tim Williarns • Shawn mentioned the City Emergency Operations Center;the Mayor has charged us with FEMA testing. Shawn, Debbie and I are FEMA certified. If there is a disaster we are qualified to apply for FEMA funding. • Gearing up for Renton River Days; Movies will be at Piazza and Liberty Parks; summer concerts at Gene Coulon Beach Park. Recreation brochure coming out in a few weeks listing all youth, kids and adult activities in the city. • Pro-plan Visionary meeting on March 29 at RCC Banquet Room at 6:00 pm. RECREATION COORDINATOR—Debbie Little • Had a trip on Tuesday, 3/15, to see "Vanities: A new Musical." Three friends face life growing up, getting older and getting over it. .1• � � � • Housing Fair for Senior Citizens on 3/22 from 10-12:00 pm. Representatives from Renton area senior housing communities will be available to answer questions about retire- ment homes, assisted living, etc. • Trip on 3/23 -- Experience Music Project/Science Fiction Museum; Museum dedicated to the history and exploration of both popular music and science fiction. • Financial Workshop–Selected Tax Issues for Retirees on 3/28 from 9:30-11:00 am. • Presentation — Specialized phone can help you stay in touch with your family & friends. Sue Campbell will introduce the latest CAPTEL Telephone on 3/29 at 12:30 p.m. • Receive a Coca Cola float for dessert and play ring around the coke bottle on 3/29. • In-House Doubles Pool Tournament on 3/31. COMMENTS: II Mary Burns-Haley–Mark Gropie from the Housing Authority was at our AARP meeting. He stated they are replacing World War II housing with a lot of new housing. A new library and Providence coming to the area. Pat Baylor–Memorial thank you were sent out. Historical Committee will meet on March 28 at 9:00 am. Is it permitted to submit copies of receipts for stamps and envelopes for reimbursement or do you need originals? That will be permissible;just submit to Rosie. It was moved by Sandra Polley,second by Mary Lou Gilbert to reimburse Pat Baylor for purchasing Stamps worth $8.80 and $10.49 for envelopes. Motion Carried. Elaine Kohier–Will we have Breakfast with Santa this year? Shawn indicated that Breakfast with Santa was cut from the budget. Breakfast with Santa was more of a community event rather than a senior event and very expensive. Entertainment alone was$1,000; a lot of expenses were involved. It was a good event, well attended and may come back in the future.
