Mayor Denis Law thanked everyone for inviting him and sincerely appreciates the volunteer
efforts that are provided to the city. Every year it becomes more critical for the operation in
our city as dollars get tighter; it becomes more challenging. Overall, if you look at the state of
the economy and how it impacts most of the cities, counties and state; Renton has fared very
well and is in good shape. The most important thing, the city has been able to preserve core

priority services. I think, and I have been saying it for the past three years, we hit the bottom
and things will begin to improve slowly. The Landing is doing very well and most businesses are
reporting great sells; however, downtown restaurants are struggling.
Terry Higashiyama said beside the support the city has given to senior services,the city
employees raised over$5,000 to help pay peoples utility bills; raised record amounts of food;
 Divisions adopted families for the holidays; put out a calendar with profits to pay peoples utility
bills; application forms for utility bill payments can be obtained through the Salvation Army.
Every night the Salvation Army serves 80-100 free meals with no questions asked. This speaks
highly of how the community pulls together. The employees are not always noted but doing a
lot behind the scenes.
