HomeMy WebLinkAboutSiler's response to HEXCindy, Bartell Drugs is a large family owned drug store chain in the Seattle area. While we are large in number of stores and locations, we are also small, meaning there are not a lot of people in the company with specific roles clearly defined. I say this as it may give the City of Renton a better understanding of the delay in our response to your notice. The city sent the letter to the Bartell Drugs in Renton Highlands, which is one of two locations we have in the city of Renton. It would seem that the store manager did not know what to do with the letter or how to respond. At some point in time, he reached out to his District Manager who asked him to send to letter to him. When the District Manager received the letter through inter-store mail, he took it to the SVP of Operations, who told him that it seemed like this was an Asset Protection issue, and it ended up on my desk. I then met with Senior Management to determine how to respond. By the time, I received the letter, the 15 days had already passed. However, Bartell Drugs is a company that believes in being a good member of every community we put stores in, so we determined that it would be best if I went and explained our program for controlling shopping carts for our stores. Believe me, my time is worth more than the fine, but we do not wish to be perceived as a company that does not care about issues the city of Renton finds important enough to pass laws about. The city certainly has the right to file a motion to dismiss our request, but we believe it does not best serve the interest of the City of Renton, Bartell Drugs or other retailers who also deal with shopping carts being stolen by customers. It is helpful to remember that city government serves the people of its community. To cite the letter of the law as a reason not to hear the appeal of one of its businesses serves no one.
