HomeMy WebLinkAbout08/06/2019 - Minutes 1 | P a g e RENTON MUNICIPAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES Tuesday, August 6, 2019 Members Present: Bill Huls, Brianna Burroughs, Dave Samek, Duffy Delgado, Evelyn Reingold, Kaie Wise, Marsha Rollinger, Mary Clymer, Neil Sheesley, Susan Jessick Staff Present: Jessie Kotarski, RMAC Administrative Assistant Guests: Renee Look, Donor & Events Manager, The Key to Change Bruce McIntyre, Arts Commission applicant Call to Order: Meeting was called to order by RMAC Chair, Neil Sheesley at 6:00 pm. Introduction of Guests: Bruce McIntyre introduced himself and provided background on his interest in serving on the Arts Commission. Bruce is an artist and a resident of the South Renton neighborhood. He is also an educator and serves on the City Center Community Planning Advisory Board. Renee Look provided an update on the programs offered by Key to Change. The organization is expanding its efforts to meet their mission to inspire underserved youth through world-class music instruction and support their development as self-aware leaders. Renee was brought on this year to assist with fundraising in order to offer a more robust class schedule and to grow their scholarship program. This year the program has added a Summer school for students living in South King County and has plans to transition their program into a trimester system to allow for more ensemble and private lessons during the school year. Approval of Minutes: The minutes from the July 2019 meeting were read and approved. MSC (Evelyn/Bill) Correspondence and Announcements:  Arts Commissioners Summit – SoCoCulture will be hosting an Arts Commissioners Summit on September 19 at the SeaTac Community Center from 6 to 9pm. A save the date will be sent out this week to all area Arts Commissions. The theme will be Building Artist Communities and Arts Education.  Event Recap – o Summerfest – The event was attended by an estimated 400 attendees throughout the day. The Arts Commission hosted a button making activity that was well received by the crowds. The plan for next year is to move the event to August to avoid event overload in July. o Renton River Days –  Carco Mural painting – the artist, Scott Douwes, painted the outline of the mural on Thursday prior to the community painting activity. When the event opened at 11am, lines were forming for volunteers eager to put their mark on the wall. More than 50 individuals came out to participate in the project.  A Celebration of the Pacific Northwest – The event drew in double the number of attendees this year over last. It was posed that the Commission consider moving the event next year to a different week (and a different location; possibly partnering with a neighborhood) to market the event as a standalone event and not a part of Renton River Days. 2 | P a g e Budget Update: A review of the current budget revealed that the Commission has exceeded the total allotment (including rollovers) for the year by $11,252.05 with project earmarks and grant set-asides. A motion was made and passed to release funds previously earmarked for the following projects to cover the set-aside amount allocated for funding the 2019 Renton Municipal Arts Commission grants program:  $1,500 for the Farmers Market busker program;  $,1200 for Plaques for City-owned art work; and  $2,500 for the Renton School District Docent Program. MSC (Evelyn/Mary). The $10,000 grant from 4Culture will be used to support the Arts Commission Sustaining Program Grant program as outlined in the application and contracted agreement with 4Culture. Committee Reports:  Grants Committee: o The Grants committee presented their funding recommendations to the Commission following their review of the Sustained Support grant applicants. The Committee made the following recommendations:  $2,000 in support of the Rain City Rock Camp for Girls pending the organization’s ability to confirm that a performance/recital will be held in Renton to benefit the Renton community.  $3,000 to support the cosplay costume and prop competition at the 2019 Renton City Comicon in September with funding for an Arts Commission award to be presented to the most creative/artistic entry at the conclusion of the event.  The Committee denied funding to the following projects: o A motion was made and passed to approve the funding recommendations of the Grants Committee. MSC (Kaie/Susan) On-going Projects, Events & Programs:  Downtown Storefront Windows – Yvonne Chan has submitted two more designs to TrafficWrapz for the boxes located at: Talbot & S Grady Way Mill Ave S & Houser Way  Vigor Mural update – The search continues for a home for the mural design by Alexander Codd.  The Renton Loop – the contract with Western Neon will be presented to the Committee of the Whole at the August 19th meeting for review and approval.  Statues for Equality – the committee met to discuss moving the project forward and decided that more information was needed regarding the Commission’s ability to fund the project with the current year budget and the possibility of sourcing a similar sculpture from local artists. The Committee will look into more options for local women to highlight. The project has been tabled at this time. New Business:  Multicultural Festival – The event organizers have asked the Arts Commission to participate in the 2019 Multicultural Festival on September 13 and 14. The recommendation was made that the Commission manage the decorations in the Pavilion. Evelyn, Neil and Bill agreed to support the efforts and offer their service to manage the task. The meeting was adjourned at 7:55p.m.
