RENTON MUNICIPAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES
Tuesday, February 19, 2019

Call to Order: Meeting was called to order by RMAC Chair, Neil Sheesley at 6:03 pm.
Approval of Minutes: There was no regular Commission meeting in January. The notes from the January
Retreat were reviewed and a recap of assigned responsibilities and dedicated projects for 2019 was conducted.
Correspondence and Announcements:
Puget Sound Educational District Regional Art Show: Adrienne, Evelyn and Neil served as judges at
the Regional High School art show and presented their selection of the potential recipients of the
Renton Municipal Arts Commissioners’ Choice Award to be presented at the ceremony on March 20.
With support from the Commissioners present, the piece, “Delicate” by Cristine Daria Stoina, a junior
at Hazen High School, was selected to receive the award. A motion was made and accepted to
present Christine with an award of $200 in the form of a Dick Blick certificate. MSC (Evelyn/Dave).
Neil and Evelyn will attend the ceremony and present the award.
Gallery Partners: Updates were provided from the gallery partners (currently working with the Arts
Commission to connect artists to the opportunity to exhibit in these public venues):
o Renton Technical College The current artist line up includes;
Stacy Carpine (January through March)
Beryl Gorbman (April through June)
Britt Greenland (July through September)
Jim Morrison (October through December)
o Carco Theatre – Artist Tracy Wallschlaeger will be showing her art in the theatre lobby space
through the month of April
Budget:
The Carry Forward from 2018 (for previously committed projects that will be completed in 2019) is equal
to $37,400.
Total budget for 2019 - $113,350 (including $11,000 in 4Culture funding that is currently pending)

Committee Reports:
Grants Committee: The Committee presented on the update grant process which will include four
categories of funding; 1) special projects; 2) sustaining program support; 3) Event sponsorship and; 4)

GAP funding. The Commissioners reviewed the updated guidelines and procedures as presented by the
Grants Committee and a vote taken to approve the proposed procedures and the recommended budget
structure as follows:
o $25,000 for special projects
o $30,000 for sustaining program support
o $20,000 for event sponsorship
o $11,000* for GAP funding (*4Culture grant currently pending)
A motion was made and passed to accept the Grants guideline and procedures as proposed by the Grants
Committee. MSC (Kaie/Evelyn)
The Arts Commission will host a Grant writing workshop on Monday, April 22. Heather Dwyer,
from 4Culture, will be leading the discussion. The venue is currently TBD, but the Commissioners
have requested that a location outside of City Hall be selected for ease of access for artists and
outside groups.
Inventory Update: The City’s art collection is currently being inventoried and added to the website with
the goal of creating a searchable database that the public can access. The Commissioners have asked
that plaques be considered for all installed art pieces (recognizing the Arts Commission’s support and
identifying the pieces by name and artist). The Commissioners also asked about the possibility of
photographing the collection. These items are on hold until the collection can be more completely
inventoried.
Old Business:
Postcard Project recap – Susan reviewed the “What makes a Thriving Arts Community?” postcards
collected in 2018 and identified three themes in the responses; 1) Family/multi-generational diversity; 2)
affordability and accessibility of arts; 3) Dancing. The Commission recognized the value of the postcard
activity as an interactive piece to engage the community at events and in-person exchanges. The
recommendation was to use up the remainder of the postcards by placing them in public areas with
boxes for drop-in collection. Some areas identified for placement included the libraries, coffee shops,
and local theatres.
Downtown Storefront Window update – The former drapery building downtown (700 S 3rd St) has been
identified as the space for an art installation curated by the Shunpike organization. The Commissioners
have reviewed a list of potential interested and voted on the top three preferred artists. Kaie will
continue to work with Shunpike to finalize details and requirements for the installation. The dates
targeted for installation are March 21 and 22 (in time for an opening to concur with the Downtown
Ladies Night event on Saturday, March 23). A tentative artist talk event will be scheduled for Friday, June
7th (in connection with the Downtown Wine Walk). The Commissioner had questions about additional
costs associated with the potential need for additional items that may be necessary to install the art in
the space. Kaie will continue to work with Shunpike and will return with an update at the March
meeting.
La Hacienda sign – The Commissioners viewed a few proposed sign designs for the La Hacienda signage
(to replace the cabinet sign currently detracting from the Boone Kirkman mural). A request was made to
see additional designs for consideration with the request for more artful designs to enhance the image of
the downtown.

Sunset Park Call for Artists – A draft of the call for artists was sent out to the Commission for review.
There were no edits requested and the consensus was to publish the Call and begin accepting
applications.
Dragon Update – The dragon head is complete and Western Neon is pinning down a completion date.
The unveiling event discussion will require a confirmed date before planning can effectively begin, but
several ideas were discussed including the addition of a downtown scavenger hunt, large posters hinting
at the “coming” of the dragon, a kids coloring book, dragon-themed discounts at downtown businesses
and live entertainment at the event.
