HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/05/2019 - Minutes 1 | P a g e RENTON MUNICIPAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES Tuesday, March 5, 2019 Members Present: Neil Sheesley, Brianna Burroughs, Marsha Rollinger, Susan Jessick, Dave Samek, Evelyn Reingold, Bill Huls, Mary Clymer Staff Present: Chip Vincent, CED Administrator Jessie Kotarski, RMAC Administrative Assistant Guests:  Alexander Codd, Artist (Vigor Mural)  Carlos Michel, Hazen High School Student  Sunayana “Sue” Kannur, 6 year Renton [Hill] Resident, fashion & lifestyle blogger, interested in the open Commissioner positions  Marija Spasikova, 5 year Renton Resident, cultural event planner, interested in the open Commissioner positions Call to Order: Meeting was called to order by RMAC Chair, Neil Sheesley at 6:00 pm. Approval of Minutes: The minutes from the February 2019 meeting were read and approved. MSC (Evelyn/Bill) Vigor Mural Update – Alexander Codd presented the latest draft concept of the mural that included 8 renderings of Renton athletes. He is currently working to make connections with the athletes or their families to approve the use of their likeness in the public art piece. The design was well received and it was recommended that Alexander possibly seek out additional female athletes to include in the final design. Alexander will return to the April meeting with the final design for approval. Correspondence and Announcements:  Puget Sound Educational District Regional Art Show: Reminder that the High School Regional Art show is March 20 and the Commission will be presenting an award to the Commissioner’s Choice Artist; Hazen High School 11th grader, Christine Daria Stoina.  Carco Theatre Artist Reception – Artist Tracy Wallschlaeger will be hosting a reception for her show at Carco Theatre on March 16. A motion was made and approved to support Tracy’s exhibit opening with a $50 gift certificate to purchase refreshments for the show. MSC (Marsha/Bill) o *For future support of Art Receptions at Carco Theatre, it was recommended that Carco Theatre apply for a small grant award to help facilitate these art events.  Renton Artists Meet & Greet – The Arts Commission will host a Meet & Greet on Tuesday, April 9th between 6 and 8pm in the Culinaire Gallery at Renton Technical College in an effort to further the conversation with local artists and networks. A motion was made and approved to pay for catering services from Renton Technical College with a budget of $250 for the networking event. MSC (Bill/Evelyn)  Artist Grants Workshop – The Arts Commission will host an artist grants workshop at the Renton Fairwood Library on Monday, April 22 between 6 and 8pm; to be led by 4Culture staff person, Heather Dwyer, with the intent to provide educational services, grant finding recommendations and the launch of the RMAC 2019 Grants program to the Renton Arts community. 2 | P a g e Budget:  The Carry Forward from 2018 (for previously committed projects that will be completed in 2019) is equal to $37,400.  The Arts Commission was awarded $10,000 in Sustained Support funds from 4Culture.  Total budget for 2019 - $112,350 o 2019 approved Budget breakdown  Grants $75,000  Marketing/promotions - $5,000  Other Arts Commission projects - $22,350  4Culture funding - $10,000 Committee Reports:  Vacancy Committee: The Committee had an opportunity to interview Duffy Delgado regarding his interest in one of the open Commission positions and make the recommendation to the Commissioners to make the recommendation to the Mayor that Duffy be appointment to the Arts Commission effective immediately. A motion was made and approved to make the recommendation to the Mayor. MSC (Mary/Dave) Grants Reports: Nothing to report from the Grants Committee for March. On-going Projects, Events & Programs:  South Renton Fire Hydrants – The first painted hydrant is complete and will be installed in the upcoming weeks. The unveiling event is scheduled for Saturday, March 30 at noon.  South Renton Mini Murals Update – Artists Vikram Madan has been busy in the Renton History Museum and has dug up some fun facts about Renton for his mini murals that will soon grace the backs of road signs in South Renton.  Sunset Fence Project – The fence along Sunset Blvd has undergone a facelift (the old slats removed and a pressure washing care of the City’s Public Works team). Mary and Marsha are working with McKnight Middle School to schedule a day to come in and work with the students on creating designs for the panels that will go between the weaving through the fence slats. The next public meeting is scheduled for April 7 where members of the community will be invited to offer their drawings for addition to the fence panel designs. Mary and Marsha will reach out to the Commissioners with possible dates for the installation of the weaving and will be seeking participation from the Commissioners.  Downtown Storefront Windows – The artists are scheduled to install their art in the windows of the Drapery building on March 21 and 22. The displays will be in the windows through the month of June.  Dragon Update – The dedication of the dragon will take place on Saturday, April 13. Plans are in the works for a celebration event hosted by the Arts Commission. There will be live music (Dave is securing bands for the event), kids activities and a downtown scavenger hunt.
