JasonSethFrom:CarolynDraper<carolynedraper@gmail.com>Sent:Tuesday,June2,202011:34AMTo:CityClerkSubject:CommentforCityCouncilMeeting6/8/20-DefundthePoliceFollowUpFlag:FollowupFlagStatus:FlaggedGreetings,MynameisCarolynDraperandIliveinRenton.InlightofthetherecentmurderofGeorgeFloydinMinnesotaandthesubsequentscenesofpoliceaggressiontoprotestsaroundthecountry,includinginSeattle,IamaskingyoutogivetheRentoncommunityanopportunitytogivemeaningfulinputintotheRentonbudgetthatissocrucialtothewell-beingofallresidentsofRenton.Abudgetisareflectionofourcity’svalues.Atalltimes,butespeciallyduringCOVID-19,wehaveamoralimperativetoprovideservicesthatkeeppeoplehousedandhealthy,thatstrengthensmallbusinessesandhelppeoplethrive.Wedon’tneedmorepoliceandwecan’taffordtopassanotherbudgetoverwhelminglydevotedtopoliceoverpeople.WeneedRentontoprioritizeprovidinghousing,strengtheningsmallbusiness,andbuildinghealthservices,foodprograms,andotherservicesthathelpourcitythrive-nottofillpolicecoffersandjails.Ourcommunitythinksofpoliceasthepeoplewhokeepussafe,butthatisnothowtheyarebeingfundedandequippedandnothowtheyareacting.TherecentmurderofGeorgeFloydandtheresponsetotheresultingprotestshavemadeitclearthatpolicehavebeenequippedlikeaninvadingmilitaryforce.Theyaretreatingcitizenslikeinsurgents.ThisisclearlookingatthefootagefromSeattleandseeingthepoliceuseteargasandflashbagsonnon-violentprotestors.Thisisnotwhatweneedfrompolice,andweshouldtakeaboldstepwithourbudgettoreflectthat.Let’sfundaPeople’sBudgetthatservestheneedsofourcommunitybyprioritizingcommunity-ledhealthandsafetystrategies,notmilitarizedandaggressivepolice.Thankyouforyourtime,andIhopeyouwillmaketherightdecision.Best,CarolynDraper1
