RENTON MUNICIPAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES

Call to Order: Meeting was called to order by RMAC Chair, Mary Clymer at 6:04 pm.
Approval of Minutes: A motion was made to approve the minutes from the August 2020 meeting. MSC

Vacancy Committee Update:
The Vacancy Committee met with Amelia Ossorio to discuss her interest and qualifications for the role of
Youth Commissioner on the Arts Commission. The Committee recommends the appointment of Amelia to the
position. A motion was made and approved to appointment Amelia Ossorio to the position of Youth
Commissioner. MSC (Bill/Neil)
Grants Committee Update:
The Grants Committee made the recommendation to the Commission to approve funding for the
following applicants:
Mask Art N. America Fashion Week - $10,000 for a virtual runway show of COVID masks coordinated
with clothes, hair styles, makeup scheduled for September 12 through the 26. The Committee
recommends funding up to $10,000 for reimbursable costs that can be submitted following the
conclusion of the virtual event.
2020 Virtual Film Summit - $3,000 for a series of virtual events in November 2020 in conjunction
with Seattle Film Summit; including classes, panels, workshops, table reads, film screenings, a
screenplay writing contest, and several virtual networking opportunities.
A motion was made and approved to grant funds and support for the two applicants as recommended by
the Grants Committee. MSC (Kaie/Bill)
Renton Civic Theatre Lighting Grant Update – The theatre is requesting a change in scope of their
previously awarded $15,000 matching grant intended to serve as seed funds for the Washington
State Building for the Arts grant. The grant deadline passed before the Theatre was able to submit
their application. The recommendation from the Grants Committee is for the Theatre to submit a
new grant application to outline the new request.
Project Update:
Downtown (Printery) Mural update – A grand reveal celebration is scheduled for Wednesday,
September 2nd at 2:30pm at the site of the mural at 315 S 3rd St. A motion was made and approved to
confirm the email vote to increase the budget for the mural project by $790 to sandblast the wall before
painting began. MSC (Susan/Bill)
Renton Hill Utility Box wrap – Artist, Eachean Edmundson, submitted the final artwork for the PSE
transistor box on Renton Hill (located at 1203 S 3rd St) for approval. The artwork was previously shared
with the residents of Renton Hill and approved for submission to the Arts Commission for final approval.
A motion was made and passed to approve the art submitted by Eachean Edmundson for installation on
the utility box on Renton Hill. MSC (Kaie/Kiley)
Pieces for Peace – The Art Walk is scheduled to begin in downtown Renton on September 12. Currently,
16 artists have been identified to participate in the storefronts installation program. The embroidery
kits will be available for pick up the weekend of the Walk debut. Kits will be available at Wyldwood
Creative and will be advertised on social media.
Penney Lofts – The four designs for the building located at 700 S 3rd Street, previously approved for
installation, have been selected. The original art by artist, Troy Gua, will be installed on the south wall of
the building facing S 3rd Street.
Benson Hill Mural – Three community events have been held via Zoom to solicit community feedback
on the project design. Approximately 40 to 50 participants have been counted at every event, and 100
“art” kits were passed out at the last event designed to encourage groups and community members to
get involved in the creative process.
Black Lives Matter project (The Owl Project) – CED is meeting with the group weekly to provide updates
and work together to identify a project that can be supported by the City. The project is currently
waiting on a response from Public Works to identify possible streets for a mural.
