At the client's request, ESNW rep was onsite to observe rockeries, vault excavation and earthwork activities.
Rockeries
While onsite, rep used a'/z" steel t-probe and observed the keyway for the rockery located along the east perimeter of
the site. Rep observed keyway to be very dense, firm, unyielding, and suitable for support of the proposed rockery.
Rep observed contractor use a medium sized excavator placing rocks with a 4" perforated pipe behind the basecourse.
Pipe was observed embedded in an 8" lift of V-2" wash rock wrapped in a geotextile. Above the wash rock rep
observed contractor backfilling the rockery face with 2%4" quarry spalls. Rep also observed contractor use several
large excavators to excavate and cut the southeast corner of the site for the rockery.
Rep and ESNW manager Scott met with rockery contractor to discuss the conditions of the rockery build. Based on
the survey staking that is used to construct the rockeries, it appears that the required offset noted in the design
prepared by ESNW cannot be met within the available space. In lieu of a third tier, the contractor investigated the
feasibility of using a permanent 2H:1 V slope above the second tier to make grades work and keep the tiers separated
as much as possible. ESNW observed the subgrade for the proposed 2nd tier rockery along the east slope to be native
and very dense glacial till. Contractor and ESNW observed subgrade conditions to be suitable to place the bottom
and second tier rockeries at an 8' distance (from face to face of each rockery). It is critical that all rockery keyways be
supported on a very dense, firm, and unyielding native subgrade before construction. ESNW recommended that the
slopes above the rockeries be sloped at a 2:1 (H:V) and be backfilled with 2"4' quarry spalls and that a non -woven
separation geotextile be placed along the upper native cut surface to help retain soil migration into the quarry spall
zone. The schematic above illustrates the critical items that must be incorporated during rockery construction. ESNW
must observe rockery construction on a full-time basis to confirm conditions and that the recommendations are
followed.
Vault Excavation
Rep observed contractor use a large excavator and a large dozer to excavate the vault. Contractor expressed plans
to continue working in the vault excavation throughout the week. Rep will return to observe the conditions of the
slopes.
Earthwork Activities
Rep observed contractor use a large dozer, a large excavator, and several haul trucks to excavate material from site.
Rep observed contractor exporting material offsite.
ESNW rep will return to observe earthwork activities when requested by client.
