Roof Drain Trench: ESNW rep observed contractor using a medium sized excavator to excavate a 150’ long 3’ deep trench for a roof drain with 8’’ pipe along the west margin of the main building. Rep used a ½” steel t-probe and observed the subgrade to be very dense, firm, unyielding, and suitable for support of the proposed roof drain. Rep observed contractor backfill with 18’’ of pea gravel and then 1’ lifts of native material compacted with a jumping jack to grade. Moisture levels (approx. 20-28%) were too high above the optimum moisture for adequate compaction to be attained. ESNW rep. communicated this with the foreman and recommends leaving the material undisturbed and re-evaluating at a later date Water Main Trench: ESNW rep observed contractor using a medium sized excavator to excavate a 30’ long 7’ deep trench for a 12’’ ductile steel water main connecting to manhole 21 North margin of the stormwater vault. Rep used a ½” steel t- probe and observed the subgrade to be very dense, firm, unyielding, and suitable for support of the proposed water main outlet. Moisture levels (approx. 20-28%) were too high above the optimum moisture for adequate compaction to be attained. ESNW rep. communicated this with the foreman and recommends leaving the material undisturbed and re-evaluating at a later date Cut Slopes While onsite, rep observed slopes of the cut slopes to be near vertical. Rep observed that the north slopes of the excavation were near a 0.75:1 (H:V) slope. Although over-steepened, slopes are stable in current configuration and stable to work within. The contractor is responsible for providing all safety measures in accordance with state and federal regulation ESNW rep will return to observe earthwork activities when requested by client 1/1
