At the client's request, ESNW rep was onsite to observe or test vault excavation and backfill.
Vault Excavation and Backfill
While onsite, rep observed contractor working near or in the vault
excavation. Rep observed south slopes of the excavation to be near
vertical. Rep observed that the west slopes of the excavation were near
a 1.5:1 (H:V) slope. Although over-steepened, slopes are stable in
current configuration and stable to work within. Rep observed that
contractor had covered the exposed slopes with plastic sheeting. The
contractor is responsible for providing all safety measures in accordance
with state and federal regulation. Rep will return to observe the
conditions of the slopes while contractor is working in the excavation.
Rep observed contractor use a medium sized excavator to excavate and
place native brown silty sand with gravel material for the vault storm
drain. Rep observed contractor place 6" perforated storm pipe at the toe
of the excavation embedder in a 12" lift of 1 "-2" wash rock. Rep observed
contractor wrapping both drain pipe and wash rock in a gee-textile. Rep
will return Monday, November 25, 2019, to observe and test the
compaction of the backfill as needed.
ESNW rep will return to observe earthwork activities when requested by
client.
