The suspect in this case is a resident who occupies a room on the 6th floor of the main tower. We were advised by DESC staff that the location is occupied by those with mental health disabilities. After a dispute and threats to burn the hotel, the suspect went to his room and set some sort of fire. The fire was located after staff went to check on him and could see and smell smoke. The alarm had gone off as well as the sprinkler system. RFA investigators and Renton Detectives are on scene processing the evidence and conducting interviews. They are awaiting a search warrant to go into the suspect’s room. As a result of the fire damage and the ongoing investigation, the main tower is not being used at this time. DESC assured Commander Hardin that they do have a place for those who are displaced to stay. We believe that after the investigation and once the fire department can repair the sprinkler system, the main tower can be occupied again. Unknown how long that will take exactly. The 6th floor however will not be able to be used until cleared by RFA. No injuries were reported. Your Police department assisted those with disabilities to leave the tower and made sure the residents were not left outside in the rain and cold by escorting them to a safe location in the south tower.
