I oppose the proposed legislation that would require the Downtown Emergency Service Center (DESC) to evict about half the population of its shelter in the Renton Red Lion at the end of May and evict the remaining shelter residents by the end of 2021. The homeless problem in Western Washington is very bad, and is only going to get worse through 2021 and beyond. We need to preserve and expand all available solutions for housing our poor brothers and sisters, not bring them to an end. I urge the Renton city council members to demonstrate tangible and active compassion for the poor and homeless, compassion that my faith tradition requires of its believers, by allowing this shelter to continue its important work to provide housing for the homeless, and dignity to the poor in our community. I ask the council to take action to expand, not reduce the availability of free and affordable housing in Renton, and throughout King County and beyond. Please do the right thing, and take a stand FOR providing permanent shelter for the poor homeless in Renton, and AGAINST the legislation to close an important existing shelter. Thank you very much for using your power to make a difference for those in our community who need help from the powerful. Sincerely, Carol Sue Janes Carol Sue Janes carol@janesmail.net LR - 000798
