Dear Renton City Council,
I’d like to express my concern about The City of Renton’r recent actions to change its zoning laws to make it
difficult to establish homeless shelters, its actions to evict the current homeless residents at the Red Lion and
the City’s lack of financial support for the County’s Regional Homeless Authority.
Homelessness is a catastrophic regional problem. Renton needs to be part of a regional solution. The Red
Lion is a good location for a homeless shelter given its proximity to the Transit Center, the fact that it isn’t
close to residential neighborhoods, yet is within walking distance to services and grocery stores. I’m aware
that we aren’t housing Renton’s proportional number of homeless individuals and that the proposed zoning
laws are not realistic for homeless service providers.
I’m a homeowner in Renton and have lived here for over 20 years. Please reverse the City’s current approach
to helping the homeless.
