THE FOLLOWING WAS NOTED:
Associated Earth Sciences, Inc. (AESI) arrived on site at approximately 10:00 am and stayed until approximately 12:30 pm
at the request of the contractor to observe sanitary sewer main and side sewer backfill. While on site we met with Mark
Seek with Tiger Mountain Homes and Mike Day of Fury Site Works.
Sanitary Sewer Main and Side Sewer Backfill
Prior to our arrival, Fury had completed excavation and installation and backfill of the Lot 7 and Lot 8 side sewers as well
as excavation, installation, and pea gravel coverage of the Lot 5 side sewer. Upon our arrival, the contractor was
excavating a trench up to approximately 10 feet deep for the Lot 6 side sewer. AESI observed the contractor install a 6-
inch T600 PVC pipe. The contractor informed us the T600 was used in the road area and a 6-inch SDR-35 PVC pipe was
used in the areas outside of the road. This pipe was bedded and covered in approximately 3 inches and 12 inches of pea
gravel, respectively.
The contractor informed us the existing grade for the Lot 4 side sewer is lower than the bottom-of-pipe elevation in the
road area and requires fill to reach elevation. While on site, AESI observed the contractor fill this area with recycled
concrete and compact it with a HAMM 3077 smooth vibratory drum roller. Upon our departure, the contractor was
preparing to begin excavation for the Lot 4 side sewer.
Upon our arrival, the contractor was backfilling the eastern portion of the sanitary sewer main to surrounding existing
grade. The contractor informed us that this area was lower than designed stormwater pipe elevations and required
backfill. Backfill consists of imported gravel borrow, which is a gray-brown coarse sand and gravel with trace silt.
Compaction was achieved with a HAMM 3077 smooth vibratory drum roller. The backfill material appeared firm and
unyielding under equipment. Compaction tests were performed at depth and at grade. Per Soos Creek Water & Sewer
district, a minimum of 90% compaction is required for areas 3 feet below grade or deeper and a minimum 95%
compaction is required for areas shallower than 3 feet below grade (see Figure 2).
AESI intends to return tomorrow to continue monitoring side sewer and sanitary sewer main backfill. The contractor also
informed AESI they intend to begin excavation for stormwater piping on 111th Ave SE tomorrow.
