Approved Tree List &
& Spacing Guidelines
November 2022 Edition
As amended and approved by,

Ian Gray, Urban Forestry & Natural Resources Manager

About this Approved List:
The information in this list provides a selection of appropriate street tree species. The trees described are
known to function in a street environment better than others. This list is subject to changes approved by
the CED Director when new tree varietals are available or new invasive pests and disease are adversely
impacting certain species in the list. The property owner can suggest alternative spacing, species or culti-
vars not found in this guide for consideration by submitting a modification request, if so desired. Trees
must be of specimen grade for street trees, have a minimum diameter at chest height above grade of 2
inches, balled & burlapped or in grow bags or containers and be approved for use by the Community &
Economic Development Director, his designee or the Urban Forestry and Natural Resources Manager. The
trees described on the following pages are arranged by mature height. Mature height and spread is pre-
dicted with an average tree age of 30 years old. Many trees will grow beyond these heights as they age
further, given sufficient watering, soil volume and soil quality.
Selection and planting street trees requires planning-before-purchase principles:
Site Location: size of area and characteristics
Distances to obstructions in all directions—signs, houses, street lights, intersections, overhead utility
lines, in-ground junction boxes, transformers, driveways, sidewalks, and streets
Future mature size of the tree and how crown spread might impact obstructions and frequency of tree
maintenance as it becomes larger
Crown spread or height may need to be limited especially for narrow planting strips, tree grate
plantings, and overhead utility lines (as low as 16’ feet over driveways, 18’-24’ feet over roads, 24’ +
feet over railways)
Competing vegetation’s impact on the tree—will the tree have sufficient soil, air-space, light and water
for optimum growth and health
Street trees should be the last item installed in new subdivisions prior to occupancy. If this is not feasi-
ble, tree protection measures shall be followed to prevent soil compaction and trunk or branch dam-
age.
Species/cultivar: adaptability, mature size, crown spread, growth characteristics, suitability
Small maturing trees: narrow planting strips 3 feet or wider, overhead utility lines, and grated tree pits
Medium maturing trees: planting strips 6 feet and wider, no overhead utility lines
Large maturing trees: planting strips 8 feet and wider, no overhead utility lines
Many native trees may not be suitable due to mature size, evergreens obstruct views of pedestrians
and vehicles, different habitat requirements and poor storm damage resilience when planted alone

Utility or Signage Element Separation Distance Required

Fire Hydrants 10’ feet

The Planting Process and Care:
The use of any species must be pre-approved by the CED Director, his designee or the Urban Forestry
Manager.
A detailed site plan showing full build-out must include location of utilities in relation to the proposed
street tree locations for review and approval. No plan is required for existing developments—a site
visit will occur.
Plans may be altered to include more or less trees, require alternative species, and reposition tree
design to better fit the street tree configuration.
Proposed street tree locations, shall be marked on the curb prior to approval.
Approved street trees shall be watered and mulch applied by the property owner for the life of the
tree following planting.
The City of Renton shall provide tree maintenance pruning for the life of street trees or by permit is-
sued to the property owner.
See the standard construction detail diagrams for proper planting, root barrier, tree stakes and tree grate
specifications. Use the chart below for determining appropriate spacing away from utilities and signs.
Small maturing trees—use in 3-5 foot planting strips, tree grates and under overhead electric lines
Medium maturing trees—use in 6-8 foot wide planting strips
Large maturing trees—use in 8 feet or wider planting strips
