Corey,
I spoke with the Chief and Will Aho (he will likely be Roy’s replacement when he retires) and Mark
Seaver and will allow the following variance based on that discussion:
· The use of the grass paving is approved as submitted on the drawing provided with the
following requirements:
o Where the fire lane transitions to the grass paving at both ends, they will be required to
install signs that state “Fire Lane ONLY” to indicate the grass paving area is intended to
be maintain as a continuation of the fire lane.
Please let me know if you have additional questions or need additional information.
Sincerely,
A

Subject: New Renton Elementary School #16 - fire lane surfacing
Good afternoon Corey,
I’m emailing regarding the use of a grass pave type system for the west and south portion of the new
fire lane proposed at the new Elementary 16 project for the Renton School District. We successfully
used this product for a fire lane at Peter Kirk Elementary School in Kirkland, WA that just opened a
couple years ago. I’ve attached a photo of that installation as the grass was starting to grow in. I’ve also
attached some additional information from the manufacturer. We can install fire lane signs along the
perimeter as well as paint the top of the adjacent flush curb red with white “FIRE LANE” stenciling to
help identify this as a fire lane that will support emergency and fire vehicles. This section of fire lane is
adjacent to an existing wetland buffer on the west side of the site that will be used for educational
opportunities so we were hoping to reduce the use of asphalt in this area provide some additional
green-scape with this alternate product.
Please let me know if you have any questions or would need additional information to consider this
product for use on the Elementary 16 project.
Thank you,
Nicole Hernandez, P.E., LEED AP
