RE: Special Fence Permit, 501 Newport Ave SE
Dear City of Renton
We are applying for the Special Fence Permit option as outlined for corner properties
The fence design is set back from the sidewalks with permanent landscaping, and the fence is intended
to have a security function the maximum height allowable (6 ft). The fence is cedar dog eared panel
fencing and intended to match the existing six foot cedar fence installed at the property lines between
the yard and the neighboring properties.
We feel that our application meets the following design considerations (justifications).
Permanent landscaping along the front of the fence;
o Hedge is arborvitaes, 5ft tall,
o Plants in ring, Rhododendrons, and hydrangeas
Modulation of the fence:
o 6 ft. H x 8 ft. W Cedar Dog-Ear Fence Panels with gate near porch
Similar design and material as other fences in the surrounding neighborhood;
o Similar to the existing fence between properties for same lot
Increased setbacks from the adjacent sidewalk: Yes
Orientation of the finished face of the fence toward the street:
o Fence provides symmetry to property and house and follows sidewalk
Other: Fence is designed both for added security to property from sidewalk and prevents pets
from jumping over from yard.
Requesting exemption (area) for: A marginal amount of fence enters into the clear vision area based on
the property lines, with an approximate 3 sf ft of the corner.
As shown on our site plan, indicating the clear vision area, the protrusion of the fence into the required
clear vision area and the actual clear vision area.
As you’ll notice, because the of the planting strip which adds another 7 feet between the sidewalk edge
to the curb, the actual clear vision line is greater than distance as shown on the Special Permit Form’s

illustrated examples.
If this area is considered, the clear vision area for drivers is unobstructed with the added buffer of the
distance between the curb and the and the sidewalk (the planting strip) of 7 ft, the 5 ft sidewalk width
and the average 9 ft setback to the fence [a total of 21 linear ft].
We are requesting that we get a response for fees and project number as soon as possible. Or, if you
agree with our assessment regarding the clear vision area and how it is improved with added width of
the planting strip, that you let us know as soon as realistically possible.
We appreciate your response. If there are any questions, please contact me at 206.349.1238. I look
forward to hearing from you soon.
Best regards
