Board of Park Commissioners - Special Meeting
Tuesday, July 13, 2021, 4:00 p.m.
In-person Informational Park Tour
1. CALL TO ORDER
Chair Shun Takano called the meeting to order at 4:05pm.
2. ROLL CALL
Members Present: Cynthia Burns, Al Dieckman, Larry Reymann, Tim Searing, Shun Takano, and Marlene
Winter
Members Absent: Troy Wigestrand
City Staff Present: Kelly Beymer, Community Services Administrator; Cailín Hunsaker, Parks and Trails
Director; Roberta Graver, Administrative Assistant.
Tim Searing moved to excuse Troy Wigestrand’s absence, motion seconded, all in favor, motion carried.
3. APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Cynthia Burns motioned to approve the meeting agenda, motion seconded, all in favor, motion carried.
4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Larry Reymann motioned to approve the June 8, 2021 minutes as presented, motion seconded, all in favor,
motion carried.
5. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS / PUBLIC COMMENTS
None
6. BOARD COMMUNICATION
a. Board member comments include: Senior Center Coffee Crawl was a great event; Next Door media had
reports that needles were found under a bench behind Senior Center (this was reported to Renton
Responds); Kudos to Renton for having lifeguards in current, regional lifeguard shortage; Kennydale
Beach Park is kept up so well; request for more garbage cans at south shelter at Coulon.
b. Tim Searing moves to move monthly Parks Commission meeting to the original 4:30 p.m. start time;
motion seconded, all in favor, motion carried.
7. DISCUSSION / ACTION ITEM
a. Updates:
1. Aquatics at the Henry Moses Aquatic Center(HMAC) is on a revised schedule; closed Monday,
Tuesday and Wednesday for training and being able to staff Thursday through Sunday, sessions
are by reservation only. Beach lifeguards on regular schedule Noon to 8:00 p.m. Aquatics usually
hires 150-200 lifeguards, asked for 65 and currently have 50 on staff, and some lifeguards work
for other districts/pools as well, due to the current lifeguard shortage.
2. Upcoming city event in September will be celebration of Renton’s 120th year. This will include a
firework display at Coulon Park.
3. Renton River Days(RRD) event is being reviewed and considered new format. This year will
involve neighborhood events and a possible downtown concert, in place of the traditional RRD.
4. Site Tours of North Highlands Neighborhood Park – New FitLot element and the Highlands Park
Futsal court.
