Good afternoon Nathan,
We’ve received additional feedback from the contractor that bentonite has increased significantly in cost and is also in shortage. We are no longer looking to pursue that material as
an alternative. We may continue our research to determine whether there is another alternative suitable material that is available. If we continue that route, we will make sure to address
the concerns you had provided in your pervious email.
We are looking at alternative configurations of the check dams and subgrade. Below is a very rough concept for consideration. The manual specifies check dam spacing so the “water surface”
in the permeable base course extends from the top of the downstream check dam to the toe of the upstream check dam. Since our objective here is minimizing the amount of check dams and
associated concrete, we would like to space the check dams out as much as possible. In efforts to do so, we would be looking to reduce the slope of the subsurface to 4% which does not
require check dams per the manual and step down between check dams as shown in the clip below. Could you please review and determine whether this is a viable alternative that the City
would consider to be consistent with the drainage manual requirements?

We would be amenable to an alternate material to CDF. My understanding is that bentonite is highly susceptible to swelling and we are concerned that it would compromise the integrity
and function of the permeable pavement; if this is incorrect and you have product information that alleviates the concern we would be happy to review it. Other materials could be used
and key properties are erosion potential, permeability, material strength and swelling.

Noted. I reached out to the surface water engineer at Kirkland to get some background on the detail and how they are justifying equivalence. I’ve also requested any correspondence with
KC/DOE vetting the design. For now, we’ll go ahead and assume this design is off the table.
An alternative option we’ve come up with is using the Control Density Fill Subsurface Check Dam from Std Plan 261.20 and substituting CDF with bentonite. Would that be an acceptable
alternative?

Paul has brought the challenges of the concrete shortage to our attention. Would the City be open to utilizing a detail from City of Kirkland where an additional infiltration trench
is placed in the pavement subgrade rather than a concrete check dam? I’ve included the link to the detail below. We would still utilize the standard spacing requirements outlined in
the drainage manual.

See my below emails with Nathan at the City of Renton. My site work contractor would like you to redesign the check dams for Mitchell so that we can use less concrete. The concrete strike
is a big issue right now and this would allow them to mix their own so we can continue with the project.
There’s good weather starting next week, so they’re going to be out there starting the driveway. Would it be possible for you to put together a new design/detail by end of day Monday

Altering the check dam spacing and height is viable. The spacing was defined by Blueline, we will need a plan from them showing the design change (note it could be similar to the attached
sketch and we can capture the change on the civil sheet with the as-builds).

Good morning Nathan,
My site work contractor is proposing that we modify the check dam design for the driveway to have a longer and deeper space between each check dam. This would give more space for water
to disperse between the check dams. It would also allow us to use significantly less concrete to construct the check dams. Right now this is a big issue because the concrete strike
renders us unable to get enough concrete to the site to construct these check dams per the notes on the civil set, but if we used something like the proposed design, the amount of concrete
required would be low enough that we could mix our own and proceed with the construction of this project.
The attached PDF is a conceptual sketch only. If you’re amenable to this solution, I would have our engineer put together a design for your approval. Let me know what you think.
