Reviewed By LAC Initials/Date SSR Initials/Date Field Supervisor Project Manager Limitations: The presence of our field representative at the site is to provide our client with a source of professional advice, opinions, and recommendations based upon the field representative’s observations and testing of the contractor’s work. Our services do not include supervision or direction of the contractor, their employees, or agents. Geotechnical recommendations for obtaining project objectives may be made by our representatives; however, direction of the actual work should come from the owner or contractor, as appropriate. The contractor is responsible for complying with the contract documents at all times, regardless of the presence of our field representative. Jobsite safety, including compliance with all applicable state or federal regulations, is the sole responsibility of the contractor. The observations, recommendations, and conclusions provided in this field report are preliminary until reviewed by the ESNW project manager. Per client request, ESNW rep arrived onsite at the Weatherly Inn development to observe and document wall subgrade excavation and slope conditions. While onsite the following was observed: Cast-In-Place Wall Excavation Observations: Upon arrival ESNW rep met with the onsite contractor (Brad, Johansen) and was informed that excavation of the proposed 13’ cast in place concrete retaining wall was beginning within the central areas of the development. ESNW rep was informed that the existing two course 6-block high ecology block wall would have the second course (2-block depth) along the toe of wall removed in order to expose the existing spread footing for the structure foundation and provide a location to tie in the cast in place wall. ESNW rep recommended that the contractor secure and retain the top three rows of blocks of the wall before removing the lower blocks reinforcing the toe, to which the contractor agreed to implement. ESNW rep observed the contractor drill and secure cables to the third block from the top, and wrap the cables over the top of the ecology block wall and secured to the existing structures foundation (pictured). ESNW rep then later observed the contractor remove three of the four ecology blocks along the toe of the wall, and place additional soil coverage along the toe before leaving at the end of day. The wall was observed to be stable and unchanged in its current temporary configuration, however it is the responsibility of the contractor to perform all necessary safety measures in accordance with state and federal regulations. It is recommended that the contractor inform ESNW if any changes in the slope conditions occur. ESNW rep discussed possible over-steepened excavation cut face scenarios depending on encountering suitable native soils. At this time, assuming suitable dense native tills at the bottom of the excavation, ESNW rep recommended that a temporarily over-steepened 6’ near vertical cut face be excavated at the bottom subgrade of the excavation, with a ¾:1 – 1:1 slope to the top of the excavation dependent on soils exposed. During the afternoon ESNW rep and the contractor observed that existing 4” ductile iron water service and joint power utilities trenches existed within the location of the proposed wall excavation, to which ESNW rep recommended that the contractor install temporary utility support before continuing with the over-steepened excavation. The contractor requested ESNW rep return tomorrow (2/16) morning for observation and documentation of soils characteristics during the beginning of the wall excavation.
