SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS RESIDENTIAL
INTERIOR REMODELS
HOW TO APPLY
No paper documents are accepted at the City of Renton Permit Center. Your application and the required documents
must be submitted using a secure file share link provided by CED Permit staff.
When you are ready to submit your application, email: permittech@rentonwa.gov with the following information:
• Application Type
• Address of Proposed Work
• Project Name
A secure file share link will be created for you to upload your application and plans/documents. Submittals will be
reviewed for completeness by Permit Staff within 5 business days of your submittal.
PRIOR TO APPLYING
Separate permits are required for electrical, plumbing and mechanical work, sprinklers and alarms. No new oil heating
systems will be allowed in the aquifer protection areas.
WHAT NEEDS TO BE PROVIDED WHEN YOU APPLY
1. Completed and signed Building Permit Application.
2. Construction Plans that include the following:
• Provide the building area per each floor.
• Floor Layout: show the arrangement of walls. Note the proposed use and the dimensions of all areas.
• Windows and Doors: show the location and dimensions of new, removed or replaced windows, doors and sky-
lights. Indicate the opening direction and size.
• Fixture Location: show the location of fans, vents, smoke detectors, bathroom fixtures, mechanical equipment,
etc.
• Show a typical wall section with all materials labeled. Indicate size, spacing, and structural grading of all mem-
bers. Include all dimensions. Show insulation, sheathing, connections, siding, weather resistive and vapor barri-
ers, interior wall coverings, etc.
• When structural changes are made, the building plans examiner may require that plans be stamped by a licensed
Washington State architect or engineer.
• Show compliance with residential sections of the Washington State Energy Code. For more information go

OTHER ITEMS TO NOTE
The person signing the application shall be either the owner or the person responsible for the work, and they shall fur-
nish a reasonable estimate of the value of the job, including material and labor.
The plan reviewer will check plans but will not do design work. Sizing of structural members and spacing of supports is
the responsibility of the owner or builder and must conform to Code requirements.

Prior to performing any renovation or demolition work, Puget Sound Clean Air Agency and Washington Department of
Labor and Industries regulations require an asbestos survey be performed to determine whether there are asbestos-
containing materials in the work area or structure. For more information, please contact the Clean Air Agency through
