Too High and Too Steep: Reshaping the
Seattle Landscape
Tuesday, June 14th 7:00-8:30 pm
Since settlers first arrived in Seattle, the
city's citizens have altered the landscape
with an unrivaled zeal. We have regraded hills, reengineered
tideflats, and replumbed lakes to provide better locations for
business and easier ways to move through the challenging
topography. And we are still at it, though now we also
understand that earthquakes and rising sea levels have the
potential to change us as much as we have changed the land.
In this talk and signing, David B. Williams will place special
emphasis on the changes around Lake Washington and Renton
in particular.
David B. Williams is a freelance writer focused on the
intersection of people and the natural world. This talk is based
on his recently published book, Too High and Too Steep:
Reshaping Seattle’s Landscape (University of Washington
Press). Previous books include Stories in Stone: Travels
Through Urban Geology and The Seattle Street-Smart
Naturalist: Field Notes from the City. Williams also works at the
Burke Museum and maintains the website GeologyWriter.com.
Photographic Pop-Up Exhibit & Workshop
Saturday, June 18th 12:00-2:00 pm
Come to this pop-up exhibit and share your own photos from
Renton! RHM staff will give a short presentation and answer
questions about photographic storage and conservation.
Protect your collection for years to come. Focus will be on
photos from the 50s, 60s, and 70s but all are welcome!
Curator's Talk: Frozen in Time
Thursday, July 14th 6:00-7:30 pm
In conjunction with our Frozen in
Time exhibit, Collection Manager
Sarah Samson discusses the
extensive research done on the
Museum's collection of 1909 glass
plate negatives. Come hear all the
stories that we weren't able to fit into the exhibit!
Exhibits
Frozen in Time
May 31 - October 29, 2016
After nine years of research, the Renton
History Museum is finally able to exhibit its
collection of 49 rare glass plate negatives with 70 images of
the city's businesses and residences identified through dogged
historical detective work. In 1909 an unknown photographer
went door to door to capture the city's aspirations, perhaps for
exhibit at Seattle's Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition. The
negatives were developed in 2009, a project made possible by
a grant from 4Culture. Enjoy this glimpse of our city in its
youth along with the maps and other sources that reveal it.
Early industry exhibits
Come visit the Museum
and see two new
permanent exhibits.
Renton Co-operative Coal
Company tells the unique
story of a group
of miners in Renton who
came to this country searching for better lives. The exhibit
features a DVD presentation showcasing many of the
Museum's rarely seen historic coal mining photographs. The
second exhibit features two of Renton's other early industries
and the people who built them: Denny-Renton Clay & Coal and
Pacific Car & Foundry (PACCAR). Included are many artifacts
and photographs that are being exhibited for the first time.
The exhibits were created with grant funding from 4Culture.
Sustaining A City
Sustaining A City, a Renton
History Museum exhibit, about
Renton’s unique growing,
cooking, and eating traditions.
Renton citizens have shared
our foodways, from
Duwamish fishing and gathering through German bakeries and
Italian wine-making to chain restaurants and
supermarkets. Sustaining A City helps the visitor understand
how sharing food has bridged differences between diverse
people. The exhibit also provides an opportunity to remember
food traditions that may have been forgotten, like pioneer
picnics and Renton’s thriving dairy industry of the early
20th century.
