January 5, 2016 Renton City Hall, 7th Floor –Conference Center
Members Present:

Staff Present: Elizabeth Higgins, RMAC Staff Liaison and Liz Stewart, Renton History Museum
Call to Order: Meeting was called to order by RMAC Co-Chair, Marsha Rollinger at 6:00 pm.
Introduction of Guests: Bernita Horn, Diversity and Inclusion Consultant to the City of Renton
Samantha Goetz-Granquist, RMAC Youth position applicant
Kianna Davis, Grantee – Tree Roots Strong Poetry Program
Bernita Horn presented a comprehensive review of the diversity and inclusion effort
she is doing for the City of Renton. The presentation included an overview of the
challenges and strategic goals that are needed to better reflect Renton’s diverse
population. There is a 26 member task force in place that is working on the goals and
a large community wide event for later this year.
Kianna Davis, Program Facilitator, discussed details of the Tree Roots Strong Poetry
Program and its impact on students. She also read a couple of poems from, “Digging
for Roots” that is used in the program.
Samantha Goetz-Granquist, RMAC Youth position applicant, is a 16 year old
sophomore at Renton High School. She introduced herself to the commission and
expressed her interest in becoming a RMAC member. By unanimous vote,
Samantha’s name was affirmed to be submitted to the Mayor for appointment as a
RMAC member.
Approval of Minutes: Minutes of the December 1, 2015 RMAC meeting were read and
accepted. MSC (Paul/Mitch)
New Business:
Bravo Award – The award for contribution to the arts in Renton will be given to Jaris
English who recently resigned from the RMAC. The award will be presented at the
January City Council meeting. A reception in her honor will held an hour before the
council meeting. Elizabeth will organize the invitations and reception for the event
and Paul Hebron will do her illustration. All RMAC members are encouraged to attend.
Old Business:
Arts and Culture Master Plan Survey Monkey – The results were distributed for
review by the RMAC for discussion and recommendations at the February meeting.
RMAC Art Project Initiative - The Wells Ave S/Post Office sidewalk strip “Art Garden”
with low-maintenance, drought tolerant plants and three concrete figure planters was
completed. The installation looks terrific, especially at night. There have been many
positive comments from people in the area.
Downtown Tree Lighting Holiday Event – RMAC contributed $500 to the Downtown
Partnership for the opening event. It was well attended by over 200 participants.
RMAC Fieldtrip –Our first fieldtrip to look at art projects around King County will be on
Tuesday, January 19th to visit the Inscape Building (Artist Studio Collective) in Seattle
and to particularly look at the work of Muralist, Katherine Chilote. We will also look at
a couple of recent “Parklets” installed in Seattle. We will meet at City Hall at 12:00.
Correspondence and announcements: The correspondence and event folders were
circulated for individual review.
