CCAugust2,20120-1821-BGeotechnicalAddendumReportPage3ChristelleRidgeSubdivisionintotheretainedsoilmassbehindthefacingunit.Thefacingpanelsmeasureabout15.75inchesby31.5inches.TheCounterfortsmeasureabout5.3incheswideby26incheslong.ThefacingpanelandCounteffortaremechanicallyjoinedtogetherduringwallassemblytoformanintegralunitthattogetherweighabout165pounds.ThemaximumwallheightforverticalwallswithCounterfortsaloneis4feet.Wallsover4feetrequiretheuseofgeosyntheticreinforcement(geogrid)forlateralreinforcementoftheretainedbackfill.Walldesignstypicallyrecommendtheretainedsoilmassbecompactedtoengineeringspecificationsandadrainagezoneinstalledbehindthewallface.RetainingWallRecommendationsTheretainingwallappearstobeingoodcondition.Nobulgingorleaningofthewallfacewasobserved.SmallAldertreesaregrowingthroughthewallfaceandwerecommendtheyberemovedtopreventrootsfromimpartingpressureonthewall.Ageotechnicalinvestigationisrecommendedtodetermineifgeogridreinforcementwasinstalled,thetype/strengthllengthofgeogridused,ifwalldrainagewasinstalledandthedensityoftheretainedsoilmass.Nogeogridwasobservedextendingthroughthewallface,butweanticipatethegeogridshouldextendsome70%ofthewallheightbehindthewall.WerecommendaLock-N-Loadwalldesignbepreparedbasedontheactualwaitheightsandacomparisonmadetotheas-isconditionasidentifiedbytheinvestigation.Werecommendexcavatingbehindthewallinseveralplacestoexposethegeogrid,exposethedrainagezoneandevaluatethefilldensity.Anevaluationofpotentialbuildingsurchargeloadsonthewallshouldbemadeandwallsetbacksordeepenedfoundationrecommendationsevaluated.SiteGradingWhenGEOGroupNorthwestpreparedthe2004GeotechnicalReportfortheproposedsubdivisionthesitewasforestedandnotgraded.Forthisevaluationweconductedasitereconnaissanceandreviewedtheoriginaltopographicsurveyforthesite,thecurrenttopographicsurveyforthesite,andevaluatedtheretainingwallheight.Wehavethefollowingobservationsandrecommendations:Thesiteroadwayandcul-de-sac,WhitmanPlaceNE,hasbeenroughedin.Theroadwayisprincipallyacut,withtheexceptionoftheeastsideofthecul-de-sac.TheareabetweentheGEOGroupNorthwest,Inc. CCAugust2,2012G-1821-3GeotechnicalAddendumReportPage4ChristelleRidgeSubdivisionThitmanPlaceNEandretainingwallhasbeenfilled,withtheapproximatefillareaillustratedontheSitePlan(CurrentandProposedGrades),Plate1.Basedontheheightoftheretainingwall,upto20feetoffillwasplacedimmediatelybehindthewallandthefillthicknessdecreasesawayfromthewall.Currentelevationsalongthebaseofthewallareclosetotheelevationsoftheoriginalsitegrade.SiteGradingRecommendationsfillwasplacedwithinthedesignatedbuitdableareasonLots11through20.Theconditionofthefillisnotknownandshouldbeinvestigatedandfoundationsoilbearingcapacityevaluated.Werecommendthesoilinvestigationbeconductedwithboringsusingadrillriginordertoobtainstandardpenetrationtest(SPTblowcount)informationandsoilsamplesfortheevaluation.2.0GEOTECHNICALREPORTUPDATEThesurfaceconditionsofthesitehavechangedasaresultofthesitegrading,howeverthemajorityofthe2004GeotechnicalReportfortheprojectisstillapplicable.Updatestothereportincludethefollowingsections:Section2.3-GroundwaterInthe2004reportwestatedthatnowaterseepagewasobservedinthetestpitsandnoseepagewasobservedonthesurfaceoftheprojectsite.Nowaterseepagewasanticipatedduringsitedevelopment,althoughpermeablesandlayerswithintheglacialtillmaycontainwater.Inaddition,seepagecouldresultfromup-gradientinfiltrationofprecipitationduringthewetseasonresultinginsheetflowontopofthedenserelativelyimpermeableglacialtillsoilunderlyingthesite.Section3.0-SlopeStability&SeismicityThefollowingupdatestheSlopeStabilityandSeismicitysection,includinganupdateoftheUniformBuildingCodeSectiontothecurrentInternationalBuildingCodestandard:BasedonthepresenceofglaciallyconsolidatedsoilsthesiteisseismicallyclassifiedasSiteClassC(verydensesoil),inaccordancewithTable1613.5.2ofthe2009InternationalBuildingGEOGroupNorthwest,Inc. C,CAugust2,2012G-1821-BGeotechnicalAddendumReportPage5ChristelleRidgeSubdivisionCode(IBC).Nopastlandslideactivityisrecordedatthesubjectsiteandnolandslides,scarps,tensioncracks,orothersignsofslopeinstabilitywereobservedduringourreconnaissance.NowaterseepagewasobservedandnowaterwasencounteredinthetestpitsexcavatedonJune3,2004.Thesiteappearstobestable.Itisouropinionthattheriskisnegligiblefordeepseatedslidestooccurbasedonthelackofgroundwaterorseepageobservedandthesitesstablepasthistory.Thepotentialforliquefactionandlorlateralspreadingisnegligiblebasedonthepresenceofdenseglaciallyconsolidatedsoils.Noknownfaultsintersectthesubjectpropertyandtheriskisnegligibleforsurfaceruptureasaresultofalargemagnitudeseismicevent.Nogeotechuicalseismicmitigationmeasuresarerecommended,withtheexceptionoftheadditionofdesigncriteriaforseismicallyinduceddynamicsoilloadsonpermanentbasementwallsandretainingwalls.Section4.4.1-FoundationsThefoundationrecommendationsinthe2004reportareappropriateforthenon-filledlots.forthelotswherefillhasbeenplaced,additionalsiteinvestigationandevaluationofthefillhasbeenrecommendedandthefoundationrecommendationsmayneedtobereviseddependingontheconditionofthefill.Section4.3.3-CantileverRetainingWallsSection4.4.2-BasementWallsThedesigncriteriaforpermanentbasementwallsandpermanentretainingwallsnowincludesdesigncriteriaforseismicallyinduceddynamicsoilloads,inaccordancewiththeIBC.Thefollowingisadded:Inadditiontothelateralsoilpressuredesigncriteriaprovided,arectangularpressureof6Hshouldbeaddedtothelateralsoilpressureforpermanentbasementandpermanentretainingwallstoaccountforseismicallyinduceddynamicsoilloads.GEOGroupNorthwest,Inc.
