Hello Mayor Pavone & Councilmembers
We recently learned that a pet store is going to be opening up in the city of Renton. Puppyland currently has a
store in Puyallup WA and has expanded to Olympia WA, Meridian ID, and San Antonio TX. Due to their
sourcing practices,the city of San Antonio and Olympia have passed humane ordinances and both locations
have closed or are closing instead of adopting a humane business model. The city of Lacey WA and Tumwater
WA have followed in Olympia's footsteps and passed ordinances over the last month.
Puppyland sources all of their puppies from a large USDA broker called JAKS Puppies Inc. Not only was JAKS
Puppies investigated and fined by the Iowa Attorney General for charity fraud surrounding fake rescue puppy
sales, but they admittedly source from more than 600 commercial breeding facilities. This is a very big
transparency problem for consumers as they cannot research their puppy's breeder prior to purchase.
Puppyland has also been in the spotlight for their predatory lending practices. Renton residents will soon be at
risk of purchasing a potentially sick puppy or getting locked into a high interest pet loan, with interest rates
reaching as high as 200%. Puppyland pushes leases and loans onto their customers as a first option instead of
paying for the $3-$8k puppy outright. By doing so they are locking families into predatory loans with high
interest rates that almost double the cost of the puppy's original price. We firmly believe that passing this type
of ordinance is a consumer protection issue for the City of Renton.
