Subject:Updated Info on Pet Stores in Renton Selling Puppies
Hello,
To all of those involved in consideration of a Humane Pet Sales Ordinance in Renton, I
thought you might want to know that this ordinance will only impact one business,
newcomer Puppyland.
All along I didn't think Sierra Pets is selling dogs and cats as I recall they started
working with Ginger's Pet Rescue years ago and were holding adoption events on the
weekends.
Last Saturday I stopped in their store. In the window is a sign stating "dog adoptions
hosted by Ginger's Pet Rescue."
Happily, the display area that used to have puppies for sale now has birds. The area
where they would have a litter of "oops kittens" from a customer is now storage space.
I didn't get to talk to anyone as the store was very busy...with customers lined up to
buy pet supplies, fish, etc., and someone had purchased a bird and all the accessories,
but I would say they are out of the dog and cat retail sales business. Here is the
information on their website regarding their voluntary decision to go Humane.

Passing a Humane Ordinance does not necessarily mean that Puppyland could no longer
do business in Renton, as they could always have the option of joining the profitable pet
supply industry. The closest "not big box" pet store to their location is in Columbia City
or Renton Highlands.
According to APPA (American Pet Products Association):
In 2020, $103.6 billion was spent on our pets in the U.S.

They mention sales of live animals including fish, birds, small animals and reptiles and
do not include dogs or cats as this practice is becoming less and less acceptable
throughout the United States.
