Renton Planning Commission, Mr. Mayor, Renton City Council, and All Interested Parties,
Good Day All,
I have attached three documents. In reviewing the correspondence, I think it is clear
that beginning in January 2021, Renton residents were not in favor of a retail pet store
selling exorbitantly high-priced puppies to unsuspecting consumers that locks them into
predatory loans, and perpetuates the unethical sourcing of puppies from high-volume
puppy breeding facilities. Is this really the kind of business that Renton residents can be
proud to have in our city?
Document:
1) Public Comments that are Pro Humane Ordinance. What I think is important here is
that there are 171 entries. Not counting the attachments received, there are 135
comments. The 113 comments, primarily from Renton residents, are not in favor of
puppies being sold in the City of Renton that are sourced from puppy mills. There are
also supportive comments from individuals with well-known animal welfare organizations
such as Pasedo's Safe Haven and Best Friends, as well as WA State legislators who
helped to successfully pass the Humane Pet Sales Bill, HB 1424.
The 22 comments additional comments are from Puppyland owners, employees, paid
lobbyists, and others who have a vested interest in pet store puppy sales.
2) Petition signed by Renton Residents in Favor of a Humane Pet Sales Ordinance. This
was circulated primarily in my neighborhood, Renton Highlands. In less than 4 hours, I
was able to obtain quite a few signatures.
3) Signed Coalition Letter from area shelters and rescues in support of a Humane Pet
Sales Ordinance in Renton.
