As requested by Perteet, I visited the site to monitor installation of drilled shafts for signal poles. At 0800, a pre-
drilling meeting was held in the construction trailer. The drilling contractor DBM indicated that the drill rig
would not arrive until about 0930. The contractor planned to install temporary casing for full depth of the shafts
to be drilled today prior to cleaning them out and installing the reinforcement cage. The drill rig arrived on site
at 0935 and was a Lo-Dril mounted on a Hitachi EX300 (see Picture 1). The contractor also unloaded a 30-inch
diameter, 4-foot long auger; a 30-inch diameter, 3-foot long clean out bucket; and a 36-inch diameter, 3-foot
long auger.
The contractor began drilling at 1015 at Signal Pole (SP) 1 location at the SE corner of the intersection of N 4th
Street and Logan Avenue. The contractor used a 36-inch diameter auger to advance the excavation to a depth of
about 8 feet. Cuttings consisted of wet, brown clay/silt. The contractor then installed a 12-foot long 36-inch
diameter casing. The casing was advanced such that the bottom of the casing was about 11 feet below ground
surface (bgs) by 1030.
The contractor then moved to SP2 location at the SE corner of the intersection of N 3rd Street and Logan
Avenue. At 1050, the contractor began drilling SP2 using a 36-inch diameter auger. Cuttings consisted of very
moist, brown, clayey sand (see Picture 2). At 1055, the excavation had been advanced to 8 feet bgs, with no
visible water seepage. At 1100, the contractor switch to installing a 12-foot long, 36-inch diameter section of
casing. The casing was installed such that the bottom of casing was at 12 feet bgs.
The contractor then moved to SP3 location, located just SW of SP2 (still in intersection with N 3rd Street).
Drilling began at 1125 using a 36-inch diameter auger. Cuttings consisted of clean sand to 8 feet bgs. At 1130,
they switched to installing an 11-foot long, 36-inch diameter casing section. The concrete pump truck arrived at
this time. At 1145, the casing had been installed such that the bottom of the casing was at 11 feet bgs (see
Picture 3). At 1155, they switched to a 30-inch diameter auger to clean out SP2. At 1200, the concrete truck
arrived.
At 1214 the contractor began drilling SP2 to depth. Cuttings consisted of wet, brown, slightly silty to clean,
gravelly sand to sandy gravel (see Picture 4). The shaft was augered to 10 feet BGS and Shore Pac was added.
At 1230, the shaft had been cleaned out to 11.5 feet bgs, with about 6 inches of ground water in the bottom of
the shaft. The electrical contractor (Amaya) began installing the reinforcement cage inside the casing while
DBM moved to SP3.
At 1235, SP3 had been drilled to 10 feet bgs. Ground water seepage was observed coming into the bottom of
the shaft and wood was observed in the cuttings, which mostly consisted of wet, clean sand. The drilling
