Ken Bret Salazar FIELD REPORT SUMMARY OF FIELD TIME SPENT ON PROJECT TODAY: Start Travel: 0645 Arrived at Site: 0750 Departed Site: 1430 End Travel: 1530 HWA INSPECTION ACTIVITIES, OBSERVATIONS AND/OR COMMENTS: HWA made a visit to the jobsite to observe the cement treatment of subgrade beneath the southbound lanes and shoulder of Logan Ave N. The crew began work at the southern end of the jobsite, at Sta. 15+55. Approximately 14 pounds per square foot of Portland cement was planned to be placed on top of the existing subgrade with a spreading truck. Due to the spreading techniques and the dust guard on the spreader truck, a representative sample was difficult to collect using a measured pan without introducing inaccuracies. I measured the area that was covered by one complete delivery truck and divided that by the tonnage of the truck. It was determined that approximately 15 lbs per square foot of cement was being applied to the subgrade at the start of the job. The spread rate was reported and adjusted. The material was tilled and mixed into the subgrade using a CMI/Terex RS -650 rotovator in 7 -foot wide swaths to a depth of 16 -inches below the top of the existing grade. The degree of mixing was verified by frequent potholing to the full mixing depth (16 inches) and utilizing Phenolphthalein to indicate the presence of the cement. From Station 15+55 to 19+10, a water truck was connected to the front of the rotovator and water was added to the mixture. The material directly behind the rotovator was tested with a nuclear density gauge to determine the approximate moisture content. The material was then spread with a CAT D5G dozer and a CAT 140H motorgrader to grade, and compacted with a CAT CS533E single smooth drum roller. Compaction was performed in static mode due to the moisture and fines content of the soil. A nuclear density gauge was used to take compaction tests along the roadway; the specific locations and elevations tested are summarized on the attached 'Field Compaction Test Report'. Samples of the tested material were collected for moisture content verification. A lab technician from HWA was on site to collect samples of cement -treated soil. The samples were molded in 4 -inch split proctor molds on site, and returned to HWA's lab in Bothell for compressive strength testing. At 1240, the rotovator snapped one of the articulating arms connected to a wheel, and could not continue. The crew planned to replace the broken parts through the evening, and will possibly be ready to continue tomorrow. Material was spread, mixed, and compacted to Station 20+25. A total of 9.25 hours was charged to the job today for equipment load/unload, travel, observation/testing, standby, sample entry, and report writing. The rotovator had been repaired through the night, and HWA was contacted at 0955 to inform us that cement treatment was planned to be completed across the site today. The crew began work at the northern end of the quarry spalls, at Sta. 26+25, heading northward. Approximately 14 pounds per square foot of Portland cement was planned to be placed on top of the existing subgrade with a spreading truck. Due to the spreading techniques and the dust guard on the spreader truck, a representative sample was difficult to collect using a measured pan without introducing innacuracies. I measured the area that was covered by one complete delivery truck and divided that by the tonnage of the truck. It was determined that approximately 14 lbs per square foot of cement was being applied to the subgrade at the start of the job. The spread rate was reported and adjusted. The material was tilled and mixed into the subgrade using a CMI/Terex RS -650 rotovator in 7 -foot wide swaths to a depth of 16 -inches below the top of the existing grade. Due to shallow high-pressure water crossings on N 4th Street, material was mixed near the intersection using the bucket of an excavator instead of the rotovator. The degree of mixing was verified by frequent potholing to the full mixing depth (16 inches) and utilizing Phenolphthalein to indicate the presence of the cement. The material directly behind the rotovator was tested with a nuclear density gauge to determine the approximate moisture content. The material was then spread with a CAT D5G dozer and a CAT 140H motorgrader to grade, and compacted with a CAT CS533E single smooth drum roller. Compaction was performed in static and in vibratory mode, depending on the moisture and fines content of the soil. The two samples comprsied of 4 specimens each were molded in 4 -inch split proctor molds on site, and returned to HWA's lab in Bothell for compressive strength testing.
