THE FOLLOWING WAS NOTED:
Associated Earth Sciences Inc. (AESI) was on site to observe building pad overexcavation / fill, and to observe an existing well that was
discovered in the building area. Upon arrival, we met with representatives from Cornerstone and Continental Dirt Contractors (CDC).
Building Pad Overexcavation / Backfill
Work continued today on overexcavation of wet surficial soils and replacement with imported rock backfill. Figure 1 shows the
approximate area of overexcavation completed today. Total area of the highlighted area is approximately 3,100 square feet. Depth of
overexcavation to reach firm support soils ranged from approximately 2.5 to 3 feet. Overexcavation volume today was approximately
330 cubic yards. Excavated material was exported. Import 2 inch minus rock was used for backfill, was placed and compacted in
approximate 1 foot lifts, and appeared firm and unyielding. Nuclear densometer tests were not possible due to the coarse grain size
of the fill material. The compacted fill did not yield or rut under the load of wheeled offroad trucks used to place the import fill. The
area excavated today was not fully backfilled by the end of today and work will resume Monday. Work completed today was in
general conformance with our recommendations and the results appear suitable in our opinion for support of the building pad.
Discovered Well
The contractor discovered a well in the footprint of the future building, at the approximate location shown in Figure1. The well
consists of a vertical 6 inch steel pipe. The upper part of the well was accidentally damaged by land clearing equipment working in the
area when the well was discovered. AESI sounded the well to a depth of 102 feet. The sounding probe encountered a soft bottom at
that depth, and no free groundwater. The owners representative and the general contractor were searching for a drilling contractor
capable of decommissioning the well.
