Rockery Details and Notes
VAUGHN TRUST PROPERTY
Renton, Washington
GENERAL NOTES
A. Rockery construction shall be preformed in accordance with the Associated Rockery
Contractor Guidelines.
B. Rockery construction is a craft. The skill and experience of the builder will largely dictate
the success of the construction.
C. A rockery is a protective system with respect to weathering and erosion processes
on an exposed soil face.
D. Slopes above and in front of rockeries shall be level.
E. Minimum thickness of filter drain rock shall be 12 inches, as specified.
F. Rockeries should be installed under periodic or full-time observation by the Geotechnical
Engineer, as appropriate.
G. The dimension of the rocks should extend back towards the cut or fill face to provide
maximum stability.
H. Rocks should be placed to avoid continuous joint planes in vertical or lateral directions.
Each rock should bear on two or more rocks below it, with good flat-to-flat contact.
I. The Geotechnical Engineer shall observe cuts for the rockery. Additional flattening
of cuts may be recommended by the Geotechnical Engineer depending on the soil
and groundwater conditions observed. Where Native Cuts do not expose competent
Native Soils, additional excavation, as well as addition of reinforcement and Compacted
Structural Fill, may be necessary.
