MAXIMUM EXTENT FEASIBLE (MEF) CURB RAMP DOCUMENTATION
BRENNON LANDING (VAUGHN TRUST PROPERTY)
Project Description
The Brennon Landing (Vaughn Trust Property) project will create 8 lots for single family homes
along with a road, curb, gutter, and franchise utilities. For the offsite portion of this project, a safe
school route will be constructed with a 6’ gravel shoulder and a curb ramp which will be located
on the south side of NE 16th St near Dayton Ct NE. Due to the existing road grade, the curb ramp
will not meet ADA requirements.
Roadway Parameters
· NE 16th St is classified as a Major Collector.
· NE 16th St is designed 30 MPH, however the project is located in a school zone dropping
the speed to 20 MPH.
Existing Pedestrian Conditions
· Concrete sidewalk ending at a landscape strip on the south side of NE 16th Street. This
project will replace a section of the landscape strip with a curb ramp.
Pedestrian Design Standards
· This MEF will construct the proposed curb ramp and minimize the ramp slope to the
maximum extent feasible. The existing roadway of NE 16th St has a ±11.4% grade. This
will result in a running slope in the curb ramp to be greater than the 8.3% allowed. As a
result, the ramp of these curb ramps will be designed to the maximum extent feasible.
· Per 2011 PROWAG R304.2.2 the maximum allowable running slope is 8.3% to a
maximum length of 15 feet which is met by the proposal. This requirement is described
in Note #7 of the WSDOT Parallel Curb Ramp Standard Plan F-40.12-03 as well as Note
#7 of the WSDOT Combination Curb Ramp Standard Plan F-40.14-03.
Proposal
· The curb ramp will be designed to the maximum extent feasible. A 15’ max length curb
ramp length will be used to minimize the slope while maintaining a constant slope.
Justification
· NE 16th St has an existing grade of ±11.4% adjacent to the proposed pedestrian ramp
preventing any ramp to have ADA allowable slopes without using the maximum extent
feasibility alternative.
