(AESI) was onsite around 8:45 AM to observe lot 5 building foundation subgrade at the request of the contractor. Upon arrival, we met with Mark Seek with Tiger Mountain Homes. We observed the subgrade consisted of gray to brown silty sand with some standing water from recent rain. The contractor excavated approximately 7 feet from final grade to get past fill soils and into native soils suitable for foundation subgrade using a large excavator. We probed the subgrade using a ½” diameter steel probe with probe penetrations averaging 2” to 4” for most of the subgrade. We observed a softer pocket of wet soils that probed around 6” and visually estimated it to be 15’ x 8’. The contractor elected to remove the softer pocket of soil and further over-excavated an additional 6” to fill back in with recycled concrete. Based on our observations, we found the subgrades to be firm and unyielding and suitable for support of the load bearing pressure of 1500 psf per plan. Large dump trucks periodically brought in recycled concrete spalls to the site thoughout our visit. We observed Mark place and tamp the recycled concrete using the back of the excavator bucket to fill back up to final grade. Location of recycled concrete backfill outlined in Figure 1 below.
